An eclectic mix of techno tracks from Batman Beyond
by Graeme Watson (October 11, 2009)
Having recently reviewed Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker, I have decided to turn to the first score release from the Batman Beyond canon...
My sole motivation for purchasing this was out of curiosity, and to complete my "official" Batman score collection...
Contained on this release are the main/end titles, which are probably the main reason to buy this CD.
In addition, there is a wide array of techno tracks with almost no orchestral elements (to meet the requirements of the producers) from Shirley Walker and her team including Kristopher Carter, Lolita Ritmanis, Michael McCuistion; as I'm not really a techno fan, all I can say is that there is a lot of guitar crunching and synthesised sounds to be found here, but with a definite sense of themes emerging for various villains.
It is interesting at least to see how Shirley Walker was able to turn her hand to this kind of scoring, given that she was very nearly not considered by the series producers despite her previous, symphonic Bat-work.
I am much more a fan of Shirley Walker's work on Batman: The Animated Series and Mask of The Phantasm, than Batman Beyond. If you are fond of symphonic Bat scores, this may not be for you, and I think "Return of The Joker" is the stronger release from the Batman Beyond series, as it contains more orchestral elements.
