Audioscapes: Analysis of Cinematic Sound
Thursdays 6:20pm-9:20pm

X34.9233 / Continuing Education / $215
SPRING 2008

Music and sound contribute, along with the visual image, to the distinctive mood and feeling
of a film narrative. Students in this course investigate the importance of music and sound to
movies, including the use of scores, songs, musical motifs, ambient sound, as well as diegetic
and non-diegetic sound. Class discussions include the relationship between a director and a
composer, how soundtracks add a psychological element to a film, and how the use of foley
enhances a sense of fantasy or realism. This course is for cinephiles and anyone interested in
the dynamics of audio and visual arts.
