Escape from the Planet of the Apes

So what is the deal on this OST? I have seen an 19 track score out there and another one coupled with Memphisto Waltz.

Does anyone know about the source or sound quality on these two versions?

The one coupled with "Planet Of The Apes" is a suite from the film. And a damned good one at that! Lots of Wah Wah guitar work and other far out early 70's Goldmithery.

The other, I have no idea what it is. Looks like an el-cheapo, someone on this site will come along with word on it I'm sure.

Hello Bellfoosh.

The CD coupling THE MEPHISTO WALTZ and ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES is a bootleg from a label named "Pony Express". The sound quality is dreadful. If you compare this CD to the Varèse Sarabande release, MEPHISTO is 3 minutes shorter in the Pony Express CD, but ESCAPE is 9 minutes longer than Varèse's. Anyway, my recommendation is that you purchase the official CD with the complete PLANET OF THE APES (51 minutes of great music) and the 16' 30'' suite from ESCAPE.

Angel

The Pony Express CD is in mono, yet not the worst in sound. So if you're a real collector of
Goldsmith stuff you probably would want it.

Does anyone know why a suite from such a film as "Escape From The Planet Of The Apes" was recording at or around the original release year of the film yet never released commercially?

The Varese Sarabande CD of Planet Of/ Escape From, does not include info on the origin of the suite from the second film.

Hi Knives!

The music from ESCAPE... was never released in any format until the appearance of "bootlegs". I suppose that the suite was assembled for the Varèse release from the original tracks. So it is possible that someday Varèse itself (or any other soundtrack label) would release a complete ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES with all the music separated in tracks.

They also did a suite with the music of THE OTHER, which is a really delightful score, and I hope someday it will appear in its entirety divided into different tracks. I think that the reason for making these suites instead of presenting all the cues in its original form is no other than giving a more enjoyable listening experience to the aficionado. It's a good idea indeed, but sometimes I prefer to listen to a concrete track with its beginning and its end clearly defined. In my humble opinion, a better idea would be including all the individual tracks and, at the end of the disc, the same music presented in a suite form (if there is enough room in the CD).

Regards,
Angel

Why Varese? Why not FSM? They've released a lot of Fox scores, and seemingly from original tracks used in the films themselves. The APES films all got remixed into Dolby Stereo years ago, so to do that they had to have access to original multi-track masters (at least separated music/fx tracks), so a series of complete soundtrack releases from ALL the APES films isn't too farfetched.
