The changing soundtrack of Star Wars, Episode IV A New Hope

Greetings:

I am a music journalist based in Boston and I have been asked to explain
the various incarnations of the Stars Wars Episode IV soundtrack in light
of Sony/BMG's plan to re-issue it more completely than ever before.

I am particularly interested in portions of the score that have been
neglected in the past. Did the digitally-enhanced version of the film
give us more music?

Anything else you'd care to comment on?

I look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance for your
help.

All best wishes,

What?!? I didn't even know a more complete Episode IV soundtrack CD was in the works!

I wonder what unreleased stuff is still out there as far as the Episode IV soundtrack is concerned, though. Both the RCA-Victor and the recent Sony/BMG 2-CD sets are already complete as far as I know.

Unless of course Sony are planning to include more alternate versions of certain cues.

I remember reading somewhere that the scene where Obi-Wan Kenobi is "killed" by Darth Vader was originally scored with Ben's theme (aka The Force theme) instead of Leia's theme. Could that be one of the tracks they are planning to include in this forthcoming reissue?

With George $$ Lucas one can never know.

One thing is sure.....every post-1983 release of those movie are horrible, and any change, be the movie or the music, are worthless!

Dont waste space in that magazine writing about something as pathetic as the new-releases of SW

From what I understand, this new reissue involves a super bitmap remaster -- approaching the warmth of analogue, or something.

I have not yet gotten the final tracking info, so I'm not sure if there is material above and beyond the additional 30 mins. found on the 1997 reissue.

Any thoughts on the addition of the second Cantina track? What about the Battle of Yavin? Then again, there was also the alternate Binary Sunset track.

Any thoughts on these subjects among the cognizanti?

All best,

Jackson

I have to agree with some points others have made, haven't all cues/themes been released for SW: A New Hope?

I wonder if we need another release - generally anything after the original releases are inferior more so in sound quality.

I have never understood how a soundtrack from 1977 can still sound better than the soundtracks for ESB and ROTJ which were obviously released many years after. Technology was improving all the time so how the quality dips puzzles me a great deal. Though the ESB sounded good on vinyl it still didn't match that of the original SW soundtrack - sadly now anything released on CD, of these soundtracks, have sounded rather flat.....no matter how many times they remaster it!

I hope, if they do release these soundtracks........once again........they truly have made an effort in getting the sound quality right for a CD issue.

I hazard this originated as a joke, on some forum somewhere, which was taken too seriously.
