Question

Avanz Records

Is there an official website for this Japanese record label?

I would like to see everything that is available currently from them and perhaps buy directly from them.

I guess they would have the best prices.

I gather they release Italian scores only or is it that they release scores from other countries as well.

Compared to other Japanese record labels, how to you rate their productions both aesthetically and sound quality wise of course.

To be honest, I thought they were out of business until I noticed this current release "Forza Italia" by Ennio Morricone on SC's home page.

Avanz seems to be quite popular with some of you fellas here.

Thanks!

http://www.avanz.tv/

http://www.arksquare.net/index_main.html also has Avanz titles, but beware, I think most (if not all) of the newer Avanz releases were dubbed from vinyl (with no attempt to clean up the surface noise).

Avanz's older releases sounded and looked much better. I don't mean to be critical of them since they have released so many obscure gems over the years, but their latest batch indicates an overall decline in quality. For example, on "La Ragazza di Trieste" there are several tracks that have annoylingly noticeable snaps and pops; the same can also be said of "Un Povero Ricco." Most likely, the original master tapes of these scores are lost or destroyed, thus requiring the label owners to use a vinyl source.
Actually, this was a common practice among older Japanese CD releases. I know the Edison label and the King label used a vinyl source instead of the master tapes for several CD reissues; so, overall, I guess enjoyment depends on how much you want to hear your favortie elusive recording on a CD lacking the usual digital clarity. In the case of obscure soundtracks sometimes you have to take what you can get. All the best,

Jeremy

I find the sound quality of their recent MATCHLESS release to be clear and dynamic, if it's from vinyl they have done a superb job! In fact this CD has allowed me to positively reevaluate this score. The sound of FOR MY ROOF A SKY FULL OF STARS from Avanz is also quite good, but (I think) I detect a faint bit of wow in some areas, possibly indicating it was taken from a slightly off-center LP (this is easily corrected by properly repositioning a record on the turntable - but which sometimes requires expanding the center-hole). By the way (did I post this before?), I have the TRULY corrected track listing for last year's GRANDEGGIO! TEMA DAL FILM GILI 45 V.A. COLONNA SONORA ORIGINALE DEL FILM - Avanz SP/CR-00014:
1. I DUE DEPUTATI Buttati a Terra* - Giuseppe Cassia, Piero Umiliani
2. DONNE BOTTE E BERSAGLIERI* (Raoul) - Taddia, Willy Brezza
3. A Jacqueline - Armando Sanino, Vasili Koyucharov
4. I GIGANTI DEL MEDITTERRANEO Lo Zavaglietto - Romano Rizzati
5. Cinzia - Alessandro Alessandroni
6. Anni Trenta - Vasili Kojucharov
7. SETTE MAGNIFICHE PISTOLE Cavalca Cowboy - Gino Peguri
8. PER MILLE DOLLARI AL GIORNO My Gun Is Fast - Gino Peguri
9. PER MILLE DOLLARI AL GIORNO - Gino Peguri
10. PER MILLE DOLLARI AL GIORNO Messicana - Gino Peguri
11. SETTE MAGNIFICHE PISTOLE - Gino Peguri
12. SETTE MAGNIFICHE PISTOLE Peruviana - Gino Peguri
13. GIUNSE RINGO E FU TEMPO DI MASSACRO - Bascerano, Marcello Gigante
14. GIUNSE RINGO E FU TEMPO DI MASSACRO Sedman (Sadman) - Marcello Gigante
15. SICARIO 77 VIVO O MORTO - Federico Martinez Tudo, Mario Sensi
16. SICARIO 77 VIVO O MORTO Tibi Tabo - Federico Martinez Tudo, Mario Sensi
17. THOMPSON 1880 - Powell, Lamberto Coccioli, Marcello Gigante, Vincenzo Tommasini
18. THOMPSON 1880 Dolce Notte - Lamberto Coccioli, Marcello Gigante, Vincenzo Tommasini
19. KRIMINAL - Raymond Full aka Romano Mussolini
20. IL COBRA - Anton G. Abril
21. COME RUBAMMO LA BOMBA ATOMICA Shari el Nil - L. Fulci, Lallo Gori
22. COME RUBAMMO LA BOMBA ATOMICA Protesto - L. Fulci, Lallo Gori
23. I DUE DEPUTATI Buttati a Terra (cover version)- Giuseppe Cassia, Piero Umiliani
I got this listing directly from BEAT (the "horse's-mouth" so to speak), and they were quite pissed about the incorrect tracks, amongst other things. I find this to be a very curious collection. Clearly taken from someone's private library of very early BEAT 45s (some vinyl noise), but I'm glad to have the CD because I seriously doubt most of these cues are ever going to get released on CD outside of this anthology. Volume II of GRANDEGGIO! is not nearly as good (in my opinion). - John Bender

Thanks bipcress for this informative response and for the other responses in the other threads.

Dear Serifiot, very kind of you! It is a few individuals such as yourself who help make this hobby (passion/obsession) a real pleasure. I find it not nearly as much fun to collect as a "spook" - all locked up in my room with little to no human interaction, and so I do try to fellowship on-line. And back to Avanz, they are a fascinating label. Sometimes I suspect it is run more as a fan-based operation and less as a hard-core money-making business. Do you remember the rumors about 8 or 9 years ago that they had been shut-down for legal reasons? They did seem to disappear after that, but then one day I noticed "Hey, Avanz is back!" - JohnB
