Question

*** Welcome IDIOTS ?! ***

Hi fellow aficionados,

I fear it's about high time again (?) to launch a serious complaint.

During the last months, it appeared to me a competition has been launched, who's the first
to submit a tracklisting - no matter how inaccurate or incomplete - which led to unknown
summits of stupidity.
Even worse, these submissions do not come from newbies, but mostly from mor eor less
longtime members.

The number of listings, which do not contain timings, UPN codes etc. is constantly growing,
due to the fact, that these guys submit their "informations" without owning the respective
CDs.
A perfect example is the tracklisting for Mr. Brooks, submitted by wjvaneden. He must have
copied it somewhere on the web, not having been clever enough to check, that Milan
changed the order of tracks on the finished product. (Has just been corrected, thanks to
Ton!)

Another inconvenience is the growing lack of timings, probably due to the same fact: most
labels publish the tracks on their sites, but not the exact timing. No problem for a person who
only learned to copy and paste, but not to think.

Sorry kids, this is not Soundtrack Idol here, but a source of information for people
seriously interested in the matter of collecting soundtracks. Those among us who can't tell
the difference between a database and a pig pen should better turn to a playground which
better suits their limited mental capabilities.

Just my two cents,

David

101% agreed
ok.. except the UPN codes... almost all asian releases don't have any. Another point of asian CDs are their titles who nobody can read.

but I agree on other points.

There are time I can't stop emailing Ton for deleting track listings lacking time runnings or other mistakes so I can put new listings.

I guess I'll keep messaging Ton... poor guy. :)

I've noticed it myself. If a person doesn't have the time to submit the track listings correctly and appropiately, don't do it at all.

Whenever I do one I find myself acting in a somewhat obessive manner. I'll check it once for mispellings or any other mistakes. Then check it again and maybe even a third time.

I'll include all the information given on the recording for each track.

Be assured... When the name WorkingWithKnives appear below the listing, accuracy is guaranteed!

This goes back to the days of WorkingWithTypewriter when I would often transfer a recording to cassette tape and include an insert of all important info.

No half stepping here kids!

I agree completely.
When I look up something on SoundtrackCollector, I expect correct information posted by OST enthousiasts. Otherwise I would check WikiPedia or some other open source site.

People should realize it's not the amount of info that we crave, but the fact that it is accurate.

I don't know if there is a solution to this problem, since SoundtrackCollector is being hosted by just two (brave) men, and I can imagine it is hard labour to keep up with so much information.
People shouldn't make their job any harder by sending inaccurate copy/paste details.

A lot of the basic info and even pics of soundtracks except tracks and timings, is submitted by SC's gang Ton & Erwin.

Many times and most of the times the UPN is not included simply because they themselves do not have the soundtrack in front of them or perhaps like 1701 suggested there is no UPN code to submit.

As we all know, 99% of the track listings and timings on the other hand is submitted by SC members.

On a few occassions Ton & Erwin might submit tracks and timings themselves or even refine what has been submitted by others like they had done with GDM's Roma Drogata's tracks which had been submitted very nicely by another member but a bit too detailed which was not really necessary.

Personally, if I catch a soundtrack which I own and is listed with no UPN codes or some wrong info, I like to update the label which is up to Ton & Erwin's time schedule to include these changes in the database.

Submitting tracks and timings is not really an exact science but I believe that one should be as consistent as possible with everyone else's submissions as to have this basic uniformity throughout SC's database.

I also believe that all tracks and timings should be submitted in SC's database exactly as they are listed on the perspective source with few if not any distracting info.

Being minimalistic and keeping things simple is best.

Also... don't forget that sometimes timings are not included along with tracks.

And yes, one should proofread what they have submitted and use common sense and even check multiple sources throughout the internet if they do not have the album in front of them.

If one finds contradicting info, it is wiser to leave it alone until someone who actually owns the album feels they want to submit and share the correct tracks and timings.

Foreign titles and especially titles not in Latin characters can be a bit of a challenge.

Basically we all ended up to this wonderful website in the first place and keep coming back because of our common passion for film music.

I think we should all work as a team and share to the best of our knowledge whatever information pertaining to film music we think will enhance SC's database and nothing more than that.

To summarize, submitting tracks and timings and whatever other info like art work etc. should be done in good faith and for the good of the whole... unconditionally!

AGREED, It's not something to take lightly, it's more like a calling!
I like it when people give some extra information,
especially about the different performing orchestras
and conductors (on compilations for instance).
Just to be aware of the dfferences or similarities
between all the incarnations of a particular title.
Usally I use tracktimes provided by the mediaplayer
on my computer, I load all my scores as MP3's on a harddisk.
You'll see that there can be enormous differences in the
playing time mentioned on a cover, or the real track-time.

Good points serifiot. Everything should be done in good faith but it's not. People don't listen. I find errors quite often. What is this? This should be removed.
