Bad Movie - Fantastic Score

I purchased the Score to "Waterworld" by James Newton Howard a few years ago because of a review i had read. I have only seen the movie once and that was enough. After listening to the score which Newton Howard contributed some 10 years after seeing the film i could not help but wonder how such an amazing score had slipped my attention. It must be because of being cursed with such a poor film.

It got me thinking about what other great scores are attached to poor movies. Can anyone give their thoughts on the matter and any other examples.

Let's say 90% of Goldsmith discography? Or Godzilla? Or Battle Beyond the Stars, Krull, Journey of Natty Gann, House of Cards, RRRrrr!!!, Wing Commander, Salem's Lot (2004/5),........... and so on....

I always loved Christopher Young's score for SHADE. But when I recently came to watch the
movie, it was a hell of a disappointment!

How about any of the scores by Richard Band or Robert Folk? Both these guys write fantastic music for (mostly) awful movies.

I always think of Exorcist 2; The Heretic (Morricone). What a worthless and boring film that is. Especially from John Boorman who usually makes great films.

U.S. Marshals (Goldsmith) A great and intense score from Goldsmith for a film that's impossible to watch unles you're a complete moron.

Sleeping With The Enemy (Goldsmith) Usually, I wouldn't have anything near me remotely associated with Julia Roberts as I tend to have an allergic reaction to the sight of that bitch. A fine score by Jerry Goldsmith. Moody, sad and dreary music. One of my many favorites.

I'm trying to think of a few more.

The Sandpiper (Johnny Mandel) Elizabeth Taylor as a Northern California artist with Charles Bronson as her punk beatnik friend. One of the worst films ever made with one of the finest scores ever composed. Johnny Mandel cited his inspiration as being the landscape of Big Sur. And if you watch the film. The scenes of the mountains and rocky beaches with Mandels music is beautiful.

My brother and I once drove from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Driving through Big Sur late at night it was pitch black. We parked on the side of the road for a few hours rest. In the middle of the night I woke up screaming thinking I felt the car sliding off the side of the cliff.

"Waterworld", "Godzilla", "King Solomon's Mines" (The Goldsmith score), "Supergirl". It's an endless list, no doubt.

The list of good scores/bad films is endless and certainly longer than the list of good films with good scores which probably will include lots of movies from early Hollywood.

The one that comes to mind is ''THE FINAL CONFLICT''... another perhaps underappreciated/good Goldsmith film score to a bad movie.

I really liked Waterworld... cool concept, so-so execution, too much pre-release hype... but
yes, the score was awesome!

The Devil's Own - James Horner (yawner film - great music)
A.I. - John Williams (semi-boring movie - great music)
Lionheart (Franklin Schaffner film) - Jerry Goldsmith (lame film - AMAZING score)
The Star Wars Prequels - John Williams (highly disappointing trilogy - splendid music)

Just my measly two cents....

Lot of people mentioning the scores Goldsmith did for bad films. Those are mostly his later efforts right? Some of the earlier films he worked on are great?

How about Mobsters (Michael Small)? I couldn't believe how bad that film is. Great, sinister score.

It's a cheap, tacky, halfass "Godfather" wannabe. Anthony Quinn deserved better during his final years.

Hello,

Two scores that came to mind for me are:

"Christopher Columbus: The Discovery" - Cliff Eidelman
"Shogun Mayeda" - John Scott

Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.
