Question

Favorite scores in a series

Here I'm just going to list a few series of movie scores and I'll say my favorite and you say yours-

Shrek:
For me it would have to be Shrek 2.

Jaws:
It was a tie between Jaws 3 and 4

Ghostbusters:
Ghostbusters 1 OF COURSE!

Spider-man:
Spider-man 3

I hope this isn't too complicated! If you want to post another series, go ahead.

Those are my favorites. Yours?

STAR TREK
Probably Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country - Completely different, dark and moody score from what the other ones were. Pulls you in right from the opening credits.

SUPERMAN
Superman: The Movie - John Williams' score was the first and best (all the others simply adapted or ripped-off from the first one), and Williams SHOULD have won the Oscar for it....not Giorgio Moroder for "Midnight Express". That was a shameful mis-vote year for Best Score.

BATMAN
The first Batman movie directed by Tim Burton....Brilliant score. Not quite as overblown or bombastic as the later films (although I did enjoy those scores, the 1989 film is my fave of those Bat-scores).

GHOSTBUSTERS
Gotta say I actually enjoy Randy Edelman's music for G2 more than Bernstein's score for the first one (which I still like, though).

FRANKENSTEIN
Out of the original trilogy by Universal (Frankenstein, Bride of..., Son of...)....gotta go with Franz Waxman's brilliant and groundbreaking music for Bride of Frankenstein.

JAWS
The original film JAWS....original and groundbreaking.

PSYCHO
As much as I like the groundbreaking Bernard Herrmann score for the Hitchcock original, I really love Carter Burwell's creepy score for PSYCHO III. I've listened to it more than the Herrmann classic score for PSYCHO (1960).

SHREK
Yep....gotta go with SHREK 2. So many outrageous musical moments, especially Fairy Godmother's over-the-top song. Hysterical stuff.

THE OMEN series
Not to knock Goldsmith's Oscar-winning score for the first OMEN, I gotta go with his score for THE FINAL CONFLICT. Brilliantly complex and very underrated out of the original OMEN trilogy scores. Huge symphonic masterpiece, IMHO.

PHANTASM
The first movie....simple but very effective, atmospheric and creepy music.

STAR WARS
Gotta go with THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, my fave of the entire series.

ALIEN series
Definitely ALIENS.

INDIANA JONES
Also definitely RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

Response

Hello Scorelover,

Shrek:

I sat through Shrek 2 when I worked at a corporate music store, and I did not like the film or the score. The composer had no business remaking David Bowie's Changes.

Jaws:

"Jaws 2" was the best, which is a rare top-pick for me because I do not like John Williams.

Ghostbusters:
The "Ghostbusters" movie and soundtrack had a tremendous impact on me when I was a kid. Hearing the score or watching the movie brings back fond memories of my childhood. Even the 80\'s cartoon series had a good soundtrack. "Ghostbusters II" disappointed me.

Spider-man:

I've only seen part one of the Spiderman series; the score, at least to me, was not that great. When I was an assistant manager at Suncoast, we played the original Spiderman movie to death. The Nickelback video played at the end of credits. For some reason, people waiting in line liked to sing along with it. My dislike for the song, and the people singing it, inspired me make a sign that read, "Please do not sing the Nickelback song. It sucks. Signed, Management." I taped it across counter so all the customers could read it. Needless to say, I got in big trouble with my boss the next day, but it was worth it.

My own personal series:

Star Trek:
Star Trek II, James Horner

Emmanuelle:
Emanuelle II, Francis Lai

Emanuelle Nera:
Orient Reportage, Nico Fidenco

Dead Trilogy:
Dawn of the Dead, Goblin

Zombi:
Zombi 2, Fabio Frizzi

A Better Tomorrow:
A Better Tomorrow II, Joseph Koo

Piranha:
Piranha, Pino Donaggio... just to name a few.

Godfather:

Godfather - The Best
Godfather II - Good
Godfather III - Fair

JB007 anybody?

For me, best is a tie between Thunderball and OHMSS (but there are several others close behind)

Rambo:
Probably 2 - some great action cues

Magnificent Seven - the original - the best Western score ever!

The Man With No Name - The Good The Bad & The Ugly

Harry Palmer - The Ipcress File (obviously!)

Born Free - the original

Star Trek - the first one - wonderful JG score

The Godfather - probably No.2 but the first is great, too

Star Wars - probably Pt IV A New Hope but Empire does have some interesting cues.

Dirty Harry - I have only No.1 on disc but from memory I have to say this was the best one

I'm suprised, nobody has mentioned STAR WARS!

I guess that's a good thing. :- )

Until this day, I have never actually perched my butt to watch any of them in completion.

Perhaps I should.

I must admit that whatever that girl's name was... from what I remember, she had a nifty hair dew.

Farrah Fawcett's though on the other hand was a true trendsetter even among the guys, only shorter.

Check out John Travolta's hairstyle in "Saturday Night Fever".

Ah!... Princess Leia Organa.

Don't get me wrong, referring to Star Wars here not Mr. Travolta.

The "Star Wars" scores?...

Credit should be given for whatever it's worth.

After all, John Williams wrote them you know.

Back to the initial question...

My immediate thought... the score music from ''The Omen'' trilogy.

All are excellent including the ground breaking first of course but I have to agree with krie that "The Final Conflict" is an overlooked gem.

Lots of the scores already mentioned are fine.

Let's see... actually ''Hellraiser" & "Nightmare On Elm Street" are good.

Can't remember which one is the best for any of these.

I'll say the first three for "Hellraiser" and the first for ''Nightmare...".

Also, the HALLOWEEN ones!

How can I forget those.

Ciao!...

One more!...

THE AIRPORT scores! All of them but with an addiction towards the one with Karen Black which is the second.

"Airport 1975" of course.

Schifrin's theme from "Airport '79 The Concord" is very good.

The movie... laughable!

BTW, 77 & 79 have not been released... at least in official terms.
