Question

Best Piano?

I'm a big fan of the piano in sound scores such as finding neverland and the fountain as well as some of the stuff in donnie darko. What are some good sound scores that feature some songs with fantastic piano playing?

The slow "Nobody Does It Better" Instrumental on THE SPY WHO LOVED ME comes to my mind. However, the same track also features some dated 1970s synths which are not everyone's taste.

For a piano dominated score I highly recommend Philip Glass' The Hours. For piano pieces within scores, there are many, many examples. I much prefer We Have All The Time In The World (from John Barry's OHMSS) to the aforementioned Nobody ... OHMSS also includes Try which is a wonderful piece. In Diamonds Are Forever there's the piano arrangement of the theme and the track Tiffany Case.

For an alternative piano sound you could try the new FSM release of Henry Mancini's Wait Until Dark.

Many of Roy Budd's scores include piano work as he was such a brilliant pianist - Fear Is The Key has jazz piano and a fabulous end title arrangement for (grand?) piano. Or you could try his "Rachmaninov-style" Concerto For Harry from Something To Hide.

Or you could settle for Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto and tell yourself you're listening to the score to Brief Encounter.

Peeping Tom by Brian Easdale. There's a fantastic Piano suite on the "A history of horror" compilation.

The solo piano piece from from "Experiment In Terror" (Mancini) is great. As well as some of the tracks from "Maniac" (Jay Chattaway).

Piano music in film eh? Isn't there a recording of solo piano music from the film "Crisis" (Miklos Rozsa)? "Lydia" is the Rozsa score I'm thinking off.

''The Conversation'' - David Shire

PS

No songs... but a nice piano dominated film score!

It's my party by Basil Poledouris. With Olivia Newton-John at the end.

If you like Kaczmarek's Finding Neverland, you should check out his score to Unfaithful, which utilises piano as well.

Other examples not already mentioned:

Pride & Prejudice (Dario Marianelli)
The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) (Bill Conti)
Convento di Santa' Anna from The English Patient (Gabriel Yared)
The Game (Howard Shore)
The Caveman's Valentine (Terence Blanchard)

Have to mention "Wait Until Dark" (Mancini) with two out of tune pianos played in unison.

Thanks for all the answers so far! I've checked out a lot of it and all of it was good but not sure any of it really has stuck out at me yet but I still got more of the suggestions to try.
