Question

FRONT INLAYS...

I'm just curious...

Is it possible to have a CD release released by the same record label with exactly the same label number, tracks, release date and UPN but with different front inlay covers?

What triggered my question is the "Apartment Zero" soundtrack by Elia Cmiral.

In SC's database...

http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/catalog/soundtrackdetail.php?movieid=2954

The one I acquired...

http://www.amazon.com/Apartment-Zero-Original-Soundtrack/dp/B000008CXO/ref=sr_1_2/002-2028891-4417611?

Cheers!

Yes. Why not?

I purchased Roque Baños' ALATRISTE when it came out in Spain, before the movie was opened at theatres. After the opening of the film, the record label (Meliam Music) released a new batch of CDs with the same label number, tracks and UPN, but different art. I had the opportunity to talk to Baños about it (he is the composer, but also the owner of Meliam Music) and he explained that the first CD came out even before a poster for the movie was designed, so when the poster was created, the film producers forced Meliam to retire the first batch of CDs and release a second batch with the original movie poster.

The cover art that appears in SC database is that of the second release. Frankly, I like much more the first design.

Angel

Why don't you submit it to the database, Angel? Would be intersting to know the different
versions.

how can I do that? There is not "Submit button"

angeldibujo, September 29, 2007; 7:03 PM

You can simply add a new label to this title and note, that this is the "real" first release with a
completely different cover in the "Is there anything special you would like to add about this
label?"- section.

Hi guys!

Exactly Angel!... How???

I recently purchased Cmiral's score for "Apartment Zero" and when I tried adding it to my collection in SC's database I noticed even though all pertinent detailed info was correct that the front inlay art work was different from the one I had.

I thought to myself that probably a wrong front inlay had been submitted so I contacted Ton to inquire about this and also if it is possible for two or more releases to have the exact info on them but different art work.

Ton was not sure as well and recommended that I post the question here on SC's forum for you guys to shed light on.

On second thought, after posting my question, I remember having seen several Harry Potter cd soundtracks of the same score but with different front inlay art work... so called collectibles but cannot remember if the label # or UPN varied.

Probably the numbering was the same.

On the other hand, it would be a good idea if record labels distinguished different covers titles by using slightly different label numbers or UPN codes.

I'm pretty certain some record labels do and some don't.

It is kind of odd though...

How would one submit other front inlay art work of a soundtrack title which has the same exact info on it?

One cannot submit in SC's database the same title with the same exact info twice.

I guess this is up to Ton & Erwin to figure out.

BTW, the only probable difference between the two covers cd's of "Apartment Zero" are the timings.

Besides featuring better art work, the back inlay of the one I have has the exact same number of tracks and titles but no timings.

Perhaps the other cd with different art work has on its back inlay the track timings included in addition to the track titles, unless the SC member who submitted them used a different source like their cd player.

PS

I have also stated this in an older thread and a lot of you guys were positive towards the idea of having the back covers included in SC's database as well.

I know that this might drive SC's gang Ton & Erwin nuts so it is better to leave them alone in their sanity.

For the time being!... :- )

Happy listening (truly all that matters) and thanks once more for your input!...

serifiot, September 29, 2007; 8:20 PM

It is not a new label David... everything is the same except the art work.

PS

I just tried doing it and it cannot be done. A title cannot be submitted twice. A message comes up stating that the title already exists.

serifiot, September 29, 2007; 9:10 PM

No seri, you can add it as a new label and continue after the warning. There are a lot of labels
that have the same UPN or label number.

If you do not succeed, you can mail me the complete data and cover scan and I'll have it
submitted.

Cheerz,

David

PS: Yes, back covers would be sure nice to have. But I'd also like to have picts of the CDs
themselves... ;-)

Submitted!

As soon as the "new" label appears in the SC DataBase, I'll submit the cover. Anyway, my submissions use to take 1 or 2 years to appear, so I'll wait comfortably sat down.

Cheers!
Angel

hI!

I see what you mean David...

I had to scroll down beyond the threatening ***RED WARNING*** to click on submit. ;- )

They have thought of everything haven't they?

Pictures of the actual cd's... hmmm... I like it.

Both sides!

While we are at it, Japanese OBI's (translated in English) & CD Long Boxes (front and back... and all four sided spine work as well)... remember those LB's?

I wonder if anyone collects them.

:- )

serifiot, September 30, 2007; 8:28 PM

Congrats, Angel! I'm already very curious to see it.

seri, you're perfectly right. There are so many pictoral informations which would be helpful.
Just think of all those different LP and EP labels. I fear, Ton's patience and server would
explode.. ;))

LB = Longboxes? I always found them nice but awfully complicated to store. I guess, that's
why most of them disappeared in the meantime.

Latest joke in France and Italy is, to release CDs in "DVD-jewelcases". (Don't know their
exact name.) CD sized, clear plastic but with rounded corners and "spines" on all four sides.
CAM Jazz and Polygram use them frequently. Looks cool, the booklets are easier accessible
but... where do you get replacement when these break? I never saw them in any
department store.

coma, September 30, 2007; 6:43 PM

Of course I was joking about LB's (Long Boxes) and OBI's even though some LB's looked pretty darn good. Too bad I have not kept any. I thought of them differently then. In fact the framing of some LB's would have looked cool.

I mean... if today some sountrack record label released cd soundtracks inside Long Boxes that featured a mini version of the original movie poster on the front cover, that would be awesome!

In any case, enough of my child play and daydreaming.

Indeed images of back inlays would add a sense of completion to the database and perhaps it is something to be considered by Ton & Erwin later on.

Some actual cd art work is interesting as well, like the Digitmovies cd's releases and that too would be an added bonus but I guess it would prove to be too complicated.

As far as rounded cd cases... I don't know if you're joking but SACD cd's come in those and they are pretty nice. Perhaps those are not what you have in mind. Yes, these SACD cd cases I have not seen in retail stores as well.

Actually there are these horror limited cd soundtracks released I believe by a German label (CMV Laservision) that come in *BIG* DVD styled jewel cases. They are pretty cool but bulky and heavy. A shame if these get damaged because I don't believe they can be found anywhere.

Check them out...

serifiot, September 30, 2007; 8:07 PM

Coooool! I didn't know about these CMV Laservision releases. You're right, I meant the SACD
cases. I only knew them from music DVDs. I have half a dozen of them and hope they don't
get damaged!

Btw, my scans of japanese releases always include the OBI. I think this is crucial to many
collectors. And it looks damn good... ;-)

Volcano sometimes added a mini poster as an extra. Some Godard soundtracks had this nice
and stupid gimmick.

coma, October 1, 2007; 7:00 AM

I think you might be referring to the Japanese Chirashi Posters.

I have had Ark Square include them in my orders.

Okay... nice... but what do I do with them? Frame them? Use them as bookmarks?

CD's are enough... so much stuff!

I don't remember seeing OBI's included with SC images.

Yes, they should be included because it is Japanese and like you stated, it certainly looks good.

PS

Some people go out of there way to find these Chirashés.

Here is a link for anyone interested...

serifiot, October 1, 2007; 8:03 AM

Ah, you mean those mini posters which I always throw away. (5$ for such a piece of paper?
Argggghhhh!) I wouldn't have thought someone would be collecting these. I only keep
those very useful protective wraps which they kindly add with each order.

No, Volcano added original replica mini posters on heavy paper to Alphaville and Sauve Qui
Peut and perhaps others more. Very nice, but unfortunately they are folded.. :-((

All of my latest japanese submissions were scanned with OBI > The Limey, Good German,
Runaway Jury, Zodiac, Stay etc. Perhaps you could take a look and tell me if you think it
looks useful or not.

coma, October 1, 2007; 11:21 AM

People collect the strangest things... including film scores! :- )

As far as folded... yes, I understand your point but still it is better than nothing.

I just looked at you submission of "The Good German" image... it looks nice but of course I cannot see too much of the OBI even when the image is enlarged (not that I would understand what is printed) but since it is part of the Japanese release, it should be included as you are doing.

Most of the OBI's are probably removed by members when submitting images of Japanese releases.

I think they should leave them intact if they have them.

serifiot, October 1, 2007; 2:01 PM

As I usually submit images in a bigger format tha requested, I had hoped that they would pop
up in a bigger size now. It's silly that they are hardly any bigger than on the site itself. :((

Collecting film scores? Way straaaaange! (Ok, as I'm collecting champagne capsules, I should
better shut up.) I wish I was a woman. Than I could collect something useful. Like shoes...

I have a copy of "The Game" (Howard Shore) with a completely different cover than the one listed in the database with the same # and track listing ect. I've wondered from time to time what's up that. Perhaps a promo copy?

Speaking of posters I have one of the original "Hills Have Eyes" with Michael Berryman of "One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest" fame staring menacingly with a necklace of bones and teeth around his neck.

Funny thing about it is the way his eyes follow you around the room. No matter where you sit he's staring straight at you.

"Funny thing about it is the way his eyes follow you around the room. No matter where you sit

Ha, this reminds me of a cartoon in the Playboy magazine, which I discovered as a kid. The only
difference is, the guys weren't talking about eyes... ;-)

I would imagine different art signifies a second pressing. Most of the time we don't even realize if a regular release isn't from the original batch because they keep the art, font, everything the same.

I'd like to get a look at the markings on the discs.
