Worst Ebay Experience

Several weeks ago I'm poking around ebay and see a listing "Switch" (Henry Mancini) buy in now $2.99 plus shipping. So I grabbed it at a good price. After I pay through paypal I noticed the fine print reads, CD only without case or insert.

I email the guy saying, what the hell is this? I wouldn't have bought it had I known...

He tells me to send it back and he will refund the money. $2.99 plus $3.99 to ship a single CD. The shipping cost was something like 98 cents.

So it arrives and I open the package to check it out anyway. Actually I was going to copy it to the computer before sending it back to the nitwit. Not only was it without the jewell case or packaging but wasn't ever the Mancini score on Varese Sarabande. It was the song CD on MCA that usually sells for about a nickle if even that.

So anyway, I sent this junk back. The return shipping was something like 98 cents and he does in fact return my $6.98 to my paypal account and saves himself some truly nasty feedback as a result.

So I still do not have the Mancini "Switch" score other than on cassette. And by the way, a great score it is. One of his last with a certain mauldlin and sad feeling about the music.

Anyone else deal with morons from hell on ebay recently?

My only other bad experience was from about a year ago. I gave a pretty good price for a Morricone vinyl listed as being in mint condition only to find out when it arrived to be in poor condition. I actually felt like driving to New Jersey for a face to face confrontation with this bozo.

Sorry knives, but you could have saved yourself some trouble by taking your breath for a
moment and contacting the seller before buying an item blindly. And as you got a full
compensation, I do not see a point in complaining.

Better luck next time!

The listing had the scan for the Varese Sarabande disc included in the auction. Only when a person scrolled down beyond all the uneccesary stuff about the ebay store does a person see the discs are sold without packaging.

It's deceptive selling. I'm always careful about what I buy.

More often than not the people I've done business with are fair and honest.

Purchased Varese Club CD FEDORA when the package arrived the jewel box was empty. I promptly emailed the seller, who confessed to copying the CD before selling but left the CD in his burner. CD was shipped. All's well that ends well. (I'm still trying to figure out how he left the CD in the burner when the "copied" CD would be the last item in the CD burner...?!?)

On the other hand --> I purchased two "Home" THX Boston Acoustic Subwoofers. Seller demanded "Insurance" be purchased at a quadruple cost. One subwoofer was packaged in original box. Other Subwoofer was package in light cardboard box with newspaper to fill the air gaps... Subwoofer was destroyed by UPS. Contacted UPS, which stated no insurance, was purchased and they would pay the "shipper" back $125.00 based on their coverage. So I lost, the speaker, lost the insurance money refunded as well as the insurance money I spent to cover...lost the money for the purchase. Tried to sue seller (in the same state as me) but Sheriffs could not serve papers. Ironically seller was in 90210 zip code. This was literally a gated community in Beverly Hills. So I was ripped off by a well off person who could have made good.

There are so many pathetic stories I have of sellers who claim they are selling "mint" CDs that either don't get sent, or are sent and are not even close to meeting even "good" criteria. The "song" CD vs "score" CD is always an issue and I always check with the seller if there is a possibility of a mistake being made.

Believe me 'killer knives' it could have been much worse but I see your point. You got a bit overly excited about finding something you really liked on eBay at a great bargain price and overlooked the fine print. The point is that you got your money back.

In any case if you are still interested, it still available by other sellers on eBay at a decent price including Buysoundtrax.

As far as my own bad experiences with eBay... I think twice or thrice.

I will not bore you with any of the details but through my first bad experience with eBay I got acquainted with SC's forum whose members were understanding enough to provide me with some degree of solace.

I guess that something bad turned to something good.

Then again, for years I hoped to find a vinyl copy of "The Bad Seed" (Alex North) on RCA. I had seen it one in a music shop in 1982 hanging high up on a wall with a $200.00 price tag. Looked for it on ebay a few times. nothing but a spanish reissue. Then one comes up on auction with my bid being the only bid and I get it for 9.99 plus shipping.

If the seller listed the CD with the "wrong" cover image, then this is a very bad hoax indeed.

Selling CDs without cases and sometimes even without inlays must be a common practice
among US sellers. I'm constantly stumbling across such offers on Amazon marketplace.

The key is communication and some research.

Most e-bay sellers care a lot about their displayed feedback and will almost do anything to avoid negative feedback.
When in doubt, e-mail the seller with any sort of question. When receiving a faulty or wrong item, let the seller know so he can send another item or refund it.
Read the feedback history and scan through other items he's selling or has sold in the past. (If someone is offering a very rare CD and claiming it to be legit, but has sold 10 of them in the last 3 months, it becomes suspicious).

Also, when something looks too good to be true, most of the time, it IS.
So far I've never been ripped-off, because I'm very careful when it comes to buying from the Bay.

Regarding soundtracks, I've found that lots of people on this forum can help out in recognizing bootlegs from legit releases and provide additional information.

On Septemper the 12th 2006 I won the 2 disc expanded score for The Rock (at the time, being new to soundtracks didn't know that it was a bootleg) for $51. After a few weeks it didn't arrive so I went back onto eBay to contact the seller only to find that he'd closed his account and other people left neg feedback to say they hadn't received theirs either.

I put the claim in with Paypal but he had closed his account there too.

In Feb of this year I managed to track him down on the internet on a website of his. He sent a few messages saying he wasn't aware and he'll post it. Suprise suprise no CD. I went back to his site and he had closed that down too.

Anyway I finally tracked him down through Myspace and nearly 14 MONTHS later still no CD which he claims he send again at the end of August and has now claimed he has recently sent me a check for $51. We'll see ;)

Oh by the way, what the little cock doesn't know is that I have also contacted the police dept. of his town and told them the full story and also sent them a screen print of a very abusive message he sent via Myspace.

His eBay ID was Shpadoinkle, I believe, so if ANYONE has been conned by him I can tell you where find the CON man.

I've had pretty good luck in dealing with people on ebay. It's usually pretty easy to spot something that is not on the level.

Someone once offered an autographed by the composer copy of "Obsession" (Bernard Herrmann). The score was released after Herrmanns death.

I was just thinking about the "Switch" score yesterday. I'll get around to buying a copy some day. The reason why I'm holding out buying a copy for fifteen or twenty dollars is because I know as soon as I do It'll pop up in a discount bin somewhere for three or four.

Personally I think it's one of Mancini's best.

I bought a Goldsmith disc on ebay awhile back. The order was from the next state over. I waited and waited until a month later when I called the seller. He refused to answer the first couple of calls. Eventually he answers and says he sent the recording several weeks earlier. A day or two later it arrives with a postmark dated the day after I called him.

victoravalentine, October 19, 2007; 4:58 PM

Let me see, maybe I misunderstood something:

The seller lists the wrong cd (by mistake or not), and then he gives you your money back, while...

...you buy without reading the item description, you read it when the CD has already been sent and when you receive the cd, you want to make and exact copy and send it back without paying anything for it. And then you're upset because is the wrong CD.

I think you found an inept, but honest seller, after all. Has he found an honest buyer?

borgtex, October 20, 2007; 9:55 PM

(borgtex) Yeah right I think you misunderstood something. Had it been the right CD I would have made a copy without second thought. Call it my reward for the trip to the post office and extra shipping expenses to send the piece of junk back.

Fine print bottom of page after a ten mile scrool to get there.. No no jewell case no insert disc only. Scan of cover listed with disc at top of page giving reason to assume it's all intact.

Chump seller/Honest buyer.

As a matter of fact I'm a seller as well with excellent feedback rating from here to Timbuktu.

victoravalentine, October 20, 2007; 10:06 PM

Actually workingwithknives you seem to be the one in the wrong. The seller wrote that it had no jewell (jewel?) case with it, even if it was listed in the smallprint, it was still listed. If you had bought it from me I would've told you to take a hike and refused you as refund. You be careful now yeah.
