Today is... JB day!

Hello gAnG of gAnGs!...

Let bygones be bygones my friends... okay?!

Today, Saturday and I ain't got nobody the 3rd of November day ought to be... a JOHN BARRY day!

Since this iconic figure and living legend of film scoring whose music has been such an inspiration for millions of dedicated film score devotees throughout the world and a personal initiation figure into my world of film music is having his 74th birthday today, I've decided from the early wake~up call hours to surround myself with his wonderful music... and what a great day this is turning out to be!

Having all of his Bond scores and a substantial, yet incomplete collection of other film score compositions of his which gradually and painstakingly I'm trying to acquire, this man's genius is so evident throughout every single note he has written and my ears are listening to.

So have some shaken, not stirred JB score and chill...

Listen to some Barry and let all the positive vibes of his music overwhelm your heart!

Happy Birthday Mr. John Barry Prendergast.

Luv ya!...

Bygones will be bygones when the guys who run this site start blocking an IP address here and there.

John Barry is great! A lot of good positive energy.

Happy birthday!

Can't believe there isn't a boatload of posts on a site devoted to film music about one of the best composers who ever created for the silver screen.

Maybe it's just the weekend.

I feel a little un-inspired today or else I'd throw down a paragraph or two.

Hey serifiot... Which John Barry scores did you listen to today?

Hi wwk (goodmorning?... whatever),

Right now... I'm spinning "The Wrong Box" on a recorded cd.

After this one, I think I'll give Monica Lewis (a Lana Turner look alike) and her songs my daily spin.

As as side note...

Even though there is a supposedly large number of members listed on SC's home page, I don't remember its forum actually buzzing with questions but I guess intelligent forums in general such as ours :- ) must have their dry spells and uninspiring moments to sort of catch up and unwind.

Judging from the bombardement of menacing threads lately by 'menace the anus' which I think has been taken too seriously, it's quite understandable.

I don't know if it is possible, but certain changes should be undertaken by Ton & Erwin in screening new members to make SC's forum more enjoyable and less frustrating for everyone.

Enough with this one!

As I previously stated in my thread, if not 'THE ONE', John Barry must have been THE composer among a few others that unconsciously triggered my interest in film music at a young age through his music in early Bond films... I never seem to get tired of listening and watching early Bond.

I had started off with Ryko's "The Whisperers", a beautiful and melodic relatively short score whose brief moments of dialogue are among the few soundtracks I don't find intrusive.

Then, "Born FREE"... among my favorite Barry scores.

After... like a magnet, most of his Bond scores many playing on repeat such as "From Russia With Love", "Diamonds Are Forever", and so on.

Randomly... older Barry scores such as "Midnight Cowboy", "The Chase", "The Lion In Winter", "The Ipcress File", "Zulu" by Silva which is actually a compo of rerecodings, "King Rat", and a few others.

Where is my "Dances With Wolves"???

In any case... one day is not enough!

Shame on me, I did not listen to Mr. Barry yesterday.
To tell the truth, altough was one of the most important composers in the early days of my soundtrack collecting, he has been loosing his influence.
Neverthless, I'll give him a spin later on. Maybe 'Body Heat'... or 'Chaplin', or both. For ol'days sake!

I have the old Ember label vinyl of Zulu. Been one of my favorite Barry scores for years. Bleak, dreary, dismal tracks and a Richard Burton narration reading the roll call of the dead. It's a potent recording. Then the flip side has stamp and shakes with Vic Flick electric guitar and Africa singers. It's great!

King Rat with the jazzy numbers and the militaristic main theme is another that's always worth hearing again.

I'm trying to think of the title to the film with the score recording on Varese Sarabande. Big dramatic music with a sinister feeling about it giving the impression that all hell is about to break loose... Mercury Rising!

I have "Mercuring Rising" which I recently purchased brand new in a bargain bin and still have not listened to it, perhaps I should.

Speaking of narrations, Richard Burton was a special narrator with a remarkable voice. Have you seen the movie ''Equus''?

Want to hear something strange? I'm glad there are sample tracks.

You might have to click on the lower left side to download flam player for 10 seconds... nothing major.

It ain't Kenyon Hopkins or Johnny Mandel!

"Bruno Maderna's score perfectly captures the films paranoia atmosphere with its dissonant tones and bizarre arrangements." (Michael Den Boer, 10,000 Bullets)

"... a crazed musical score from Bruno Maderna - this composer's mix of woozy strings and discordant jazz guitar is guaranteed to make you edgy and nervous ..." (Don Guarisco, DVD Maniacs)

"... Bruno Maderna's bizarre score, which somehow manages to be incredibly annoying and completely appropriate at the same time ..." (Michael Mackenzie, DVD Times)

"The avant-garde Bruno Maderna score is violent and nerve-wracking." (Chris Fujiwara/A. S. Hamrah, Hermenaut)

"Bruno Maderna's score is akin to the sound of chalk screeching across a blackboard ..." (Robert Monell, I'm In a Jess Franco State of Mind)

****************************************************

Going by what I see in SC's database... is this why this man has never composed more film scores???

I always welcome 'avant garde' film music but if ALL the tracks are similar to the provided sample tracks, the music would most likely ensure me a visit to Bellevue's Emergency Room.

The music might work well within this 60's film which I don't believe I have seen but as a solitary listen... I'm not sure.

They even have included 10 extra bonus tracks.

Of what???

The more I listen to whatever I am listening I'm being tempted to get this and find out what the hell the rest of the music is like.

They should have stuck though with the cover art from the original 60's LP with the very sexy and sizzling Lolobrigida posing all over.

I can understand why five people have the LP on their wishlist. :- )

Ok, now I'm lost! What happened here?!! Is there something missing? From where this Bruno Maderna came from? Who is the 'creep'? Did I step into some twilight zone ep, or what?!

antonio_lerias, November 5, 2007; 2:34 PM

It's a new release from Fin De Siecle Media.

I know, I know... the conversation has not been very consistent and it's not even a full moon yet.

From Barry to Monica Lewis to Maderna.

Come to think of it Antonio, this music could have very well been used in some Twilight Zone episode.

Twilight Zone, episode "serifiot"... TAKE 3!

:- )

(antonio lerias) A post was deleted that I responded to. Some nitwit keeps trying his luck if it should be called that. Moments ago I deleted my response.

"but I'd proclaim every day a JB day!" [Coma]

I'm in as long as we are talkin' about... Jarco Beltrami, James Borner, John Billiams, Juce Broughton, Jangelo Badalamenti, James N Boward, Jathan Barr, Jelmer Bernstein... and last, but not least, Justerini & Brooks, known throughout the World as J&B.

antonio_lerias, November 6, 2007; 1:34 PM

To be more precise, I meant Jim Beam, Jack Baniels and Johnny Balker... ;-)
