Question about Japanese OST Vessel of Sand? Sand Machine?
I have a CD from Japan that I think is translated to “Vessel of Sand”? Or maybe “Sand Machine”? It is a Japanese original soundtrack by Yasushi Akutagawa. There are two songs in Japanese, 3 ½ and 4 ½ minutes long, and two long tracks of mixed music and narration or dialog. Total time is little over 50 minutes. Everything is in Japanese including all but a few words of the insert notes. Apparently from a 1975 film, the CD was released in 2001. On the Volcano label, CPC8-3038. Do any of you know of this film? What is the correct translation of the title?
I may sell or trade it, but don't know enough to describe it accurately.

I used to have the (Japanese) soundtrack LP of this film in the 1970-s. It was called "Vessels of
Sand" if I recall correctly. I know nothing about the film though.

The name of the film is Suna no Utsuwa, which I've seen translated as either Vessel of Sand or Castle of Sand. It was directed by Yoshitaro Nomura. To the best of my knowledge, Yasushi Akutagawa only served as the musical director for the film, and the music was actually composed by Mitsuaki Kanno. The Volcano CD was reissued earlier this year by Universal Music in a double disc set that also includes the "Destiny Suite" for piano and orchestra, composed specifically for the film.
In 2004 there was also another adaptation of the story, this time featuring a score by Akira Senju.
Universal Music also released another double disc set of scores to Yoshitaro Nomura films, featuring Village of Eight Gravestones, The Incident, and The Demon. All three scores were composed by Yasushi Akutagawa, and are fantastic.
