That Swinging '60s' Lounge Sound... - Help Wanted!

Hey 'Boarders,

Wondered if anyone here could help me out.

I'm a huge fan of the very-easy listening lounge style from the 60s, the sort that's string-heavy and slightly Jazzy with a little big band thrown in at times.

The sort of scores I have that capture this are things like John Williams' Fitzwilly, some of the non-action John Barry Bond stuff of that era, John Barry's score for The Knack etc....

Can any of you good folk out there recommend anything that's in a similar vein? It's Christmas wishlist forming time here in my house and I'd love to be able to chill out in smooth style this Xmas.

I've just spotted that Intrada (who are rapidly rising in my estimation with their Alien 2CD release - but that's not exactly 'party' music is it) have a Neal Hefti / Leonard Rosenman 60s release of music from Sex & The Single Girl and The Chapman Report. The description appears to suggest it might be on the kind of lines I'm looking for but can anyone confirm this?

Much appreciated,

Adewatz

Hello Adewatz,

I'm not shure if you are after original soundtracks only, but if you are open to
other Lounge compilations as well I can recommend the Ultra Lounge series
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_m/103-8903666-6598217?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=ultra+lounge&x=9&y=12
If the link doen't work, look for Ultra Lounge on Amazon.com.
I own two movie/tv related cd's from this series and I like them very much.
In soundtracks only I'd like to suggest Breakfast at Tiffany's and other Mancini soundtracks.

I hope this helps you a bit underway,
EnjoyTheMusic,
Wim

Cinema Italiano - Morricone & Rota by Henry Mancini or Penelope/Bachelor in Paradise by Williams/Mancini are a couple of light ones to enjoy.

Holy champagne wishes and caviar dreams!...

:- o

I haven't listened to these gems for some time now.

Personally, I remember finding every single one of the first eighteen compilation volume CD's from this ''ULTRA~LOUNGE'' series suggested by contact and everything on them such as art work, liner notes, music, sound, bla bla bla... EX-CEL-LENT!

Heck... they even smelled good!

They have been around for some time now and even though not film score music per se, except some tracks, they feature some of the coolest sounding lounge music by great musicians!

Browsing through Amazon's website, my completist alterego is crying out that I need to add some more titles to complete this wonderful series like the Xmas ones I noticed.

Quelle horreur!... they can also be downloaded.

BOO!

Listen to the various samplers Andewatz and if you like what you hear, you might want to try the sampler CD first and if memory serves me right it was a digi (the only digi in the series) and had 'velvety' leopard skin packaging but frankly it doesn't really do justice to the countless music tracks available from the whole series.

The one titled ''Mondo Hollywood" could be considered rearrangements of various film music with an ultra lounge feel to them.

As far as strictly scores... definitely lots and lots!

I can't think of any specific titles but I'm sure fellow SC members would come up with titles in an instant.

I would assume Mancini, Morricone (Verushka?), etc. and lots of Italian and European stuff.

Perhaps Movie Grooves could be of help, a great website with sample tracks on almost everything... but shop around first.

"Sex And The Single Girl" is mostly a big band jazz score. A lot of energy and strength. A corny song song by Fran Jeffries with intentionally hillarious lyrics has always given be a laugh.

"Hefti In Gotham City" is all out technicolor cool and sixties swing. Twangy rock and roll jazz. I believe it's on a CD under the title Batman Theme And 19 Other Hefti Bat Songs". The recording will liven up any day.

"Johnny Cool" (Billy May) has a sinister yet fun feeling about. A big band blast with some heavy horn work throughout. A pair of swinging Sammy davis Jr. tunes really rock the house.

A lot of the Italian Cam CD's. How about "Seven Golden Men"(Armando Trovioli) ? That one made an American release back in the late 60's. One of the first films score I bought.

"Il Profetta" is another one that really grooves out. Technicolor, Ann Margaret in a bikini wiggling her ass and Armando Trovioli music. Such a combination can mean only one thing. The best of times!

These are a few that come to mind with me at first thought.

Just thought of another... "The Sweet Ride" (Pete Rugolo).

I'm listening to the recently purchased '' Verushka" and I don't believe I can categorize it as strictly lounge.

Tantalizing, fondling, orgasmic music... definitely Morricone!
