Conan Trilogy in a 2 disc set!

I just bought on ebay the trilogy Conan composed by Basil Poledouris and it's a very rare 2 disc set who contain : Conan the Barbarian expanded edition 16 tracks on the first disc and Conan the Destroyer 13 tracks + 6 tracks of the Conan live Show on the second disc !

It is say that this edition was only sold in a fan convention or something like that and i want to have your opinion on it , i want to know if it's a legit copie etc...

You can see it on ebay by typing Conan in worldwide and music category ...

those are printable CDRs.
never heard of this edition.
this one can't be legit but a fan-made bootleg.

Is it something like this?
http://tinyurl.com/2l7l9f

Because this one is bootleg.

if it doesn't have a bar code, it's probably fake.
Also...
I've noticed that, for the most part-- you know how, when you look at the front of a CD's jewelcase, and there's the album cover, and then to the left of it there is that black plastic strip that is composed of a bunch of thin pinstripes...and sometimes, instead of being black, it's clear plastic(?)...well, (for the most part) if ever there is printing underneath the clear strip that says anything to the effect of 'limited soundtrack', or 'collector's blah-b-blah', or whatever, --
...then it's probably fake.

Yes soundtrack it's the one i bought and from this seller , before buying i talk with the seller and it say that everything was legit , it was an edition distributed for free in a fan convention , maybe that's why there is not any logo!

I thought only china had bootleg cd's...

A bootleg means the sound is mp3 ?

Are there any laws on ebay for getting my money back and report this seller as a pirate ?

Also if you look the seller's evaluation you will see strangely that other buyers are happy with this edition so i don't understand...

lunar666, January 30, 2008; 1:11 AM

This is definitely not legit, probably made by fans.
The sound could not be compressed, it depends on used source. From tracklisting it looks like they could use Varese Sarabande CDs for The Barbarian and The Destroyer.
You can try to get your money back on ebay. I am surprised this seller isn't banned yet, he is selling this "unofficial" stuff for a some time.
And why are other buyers happy? They probably like the music and don't care much about medium's origin.

The overstretched picture on the back is a laugh, this is definately a pretty worse handmade boot***
I would certainly try to get your money back.
Cheers!

rmensing, January 30, 2008; 11:48 AM

i'm very disappointed to hear that this is a bootleg!
But i don't think i'm gonna have my money back because i already paid by paypal and if i send a message to the seller saying that i changed my mind , he's gonna tell me to get lost ...
Also there's too many bootlegs on ebay , i can't recognize them all ...
And i don't know where to buy those rare stuff except on ebay!

lunar666, January 30, 2008; 12:00 PM

Beware of this seller - lots of bootlegs can be found here and when asked this question, he can't seem to tell the difference between a factory pressed CD and a CD-R...
So before you buy, do your research.

lunar666:
before you give any feedback on e-bay, contact the seller and explain the problem. I'm sure he will refund the money when you return the CD to him.

Concerning barcodes: this is not a way to reveal a bootleg. For example, many of the discs from e@stgate (Tangerine Dream) don't bare a barcode, and they are 100% legit.

rinse_dream, January 30, 2008; 12:16 PM

I did some research before buyin but i didn't find anything so i send a message to the seller and he told me that this edition was only made and distributed at a fan convention but now that i see he's got too many of it , i think he lied to me...

As for the bar code , you say some bootlegs have it ?
Now you scared me ...

lunar666, January 30, 2008; 12:18 PM

lunar666:

If you are not sure, the best way is to ask the people on this forum. They can tell you if it's a bootleg or not, and also why.

As I stated before, this seller gives out 'dubious' information, making you believe it is a legit factory pressed CD when it is, in fact, not.
Just contact him to set things right, I'm certain he will cooperate.

rinse_dream, January 30, 2008; 12:42 PM

Rinse dream : thanks for your help , i just send a message to the seller and i told him that maybe he doesn't know he sell bootlegs and if he refund me , i will not report him or give him bad evaluation...
I hope he's gonna cooperate but he must had already shipped the item so i will have to send him back ...

It's strange that on this site nobody had reported this bootleg on the conan thread so it will warn the new members to avoid it !

@ lunar666:

well.. the bootleg-topic is very hot and runs very deep. Only by experience you can learn which CD is a bootleg or not.
Whether you like it or not is a matter of taste which is very different from collector to collector.
You say you don't like boots but on the other side you would like to buy those rare stuff. If there is no legit release of an expanded or a complete score of a title but it exists as a bootleg then there are only 2 ways to get it: buy it and be happy like the other eBay members or find a source where you can trade.

You can't reveal boots by its barcodes. There are boots which are real pressed CDs, not CDRs. On the other hand there are boots which only exist as MP3s. Some have bad quality and other are just great. There are "complete score" which the source was an isolated DVD audio track. People rip those isolated tracks and sell or trade them as "expanded" or "complete" scores.
Collectors Editions, Convention Stuff, Limited, Ultimate, Expanded, Rejected... those could be boots or legit releases, you'll never know until you have the experience or the help of other people who know what's going on.

There are boot-haters as well as boot-lovers. I guess you have to find your own way to deal with this.

1701, January 30, 2008; 5:27 PM

Thanks 1701 i understand your point of view!
Few years ago i bought a lots of OST of video games but i only know those are bootlegs since last year , i found a site who was giving the logo name of bootleggers in china and so i became paranoiac , before buyin something , i spend hours on the net to collect some review but sometime i find nothing so i try to buy it hoping this is not a bootleg because the problem with bootlegs for me is not a question of legit product or not , it's a matter of quality , for me the bootleggers are pirates , so they put a very bad quality in their product , their goal is to make money , i think anyone can understand that i don't want to buy mp3 stuff coz the quality is horrible , but if there's a bootleg with the same quality than a legit stuff and if it's the only way for me to have a soundtrack for example , then i go for it , i don't care about morality , what i want is quality , no matter where the product came from and who made it ...

I didn't find the bootleg thread on this forum , i'm gonna search it better ...

1701 , if i refer to what you sayed , the soundtrack i'm talking about ( conan on 2 disc set ) maybe this is a bootleg but maybe it has the same quality of sound than the Varese sarabande release ?

lunar666, January 30, 2008; 5:54 PM

This set was also being sold on EBay a while back.

psicorpsranger, January 30, 2008; 7:55 PM

@ lunar666

I understand your situation. Especially if you speak up those china and korea bootlegers. I for myself bought some chinese boots of some anime OSTs, but only after I received them I realized that those were boots because of the press quality of the CD itself. The sound was ok but because the CD was a cheap pressing it has lot of anomalies while listening to it.
But than again on the other hand there exist TOP boots with extraordinary sound and press quality. I don't wanna start listing those nice boots on this forum because this topic might be deleted anyway.

But to see all bootlegers as pirates is wrong because there are some who produce quality pressing and sell them for decent prices. Of course there also are some eBay members who are selling rare stuff for psycho bucks. Well this is another story.
Some scores even don't get a proper release. So where is the stealing when a great bootleg shows up for lets say 20-25$ and no record label isn't going to release it for a long time?
How many years did it take to release ALIEN (the complete score)? And how many boots were produced till this legit release? Too many. And still ALIEN is a success in selling!
Even if I own a 2-CD bootleg I also bought the Intrada release.

So sometime I'm even happy with some boots because it may take very long time till a proper release is out.
And the worst thing is the proper one could never see the light!

Believe me the biggest stealer are the music and film industry themselves and the government is the biggest mafia at all.

1701, January 30, 2008; 8:20 PM

...and don't forget the infamous 'expanded soundtrack' titles...which are, most of the time, 2 CD sets...and are almost ALWAYS bootlegs!
Not ALL the time, but for the most part...

Unless it was released by the composer him or herself.

bugoobiga, January 30, 2008; 10:57 PM

You know when you think about it , it's a shame that since Basil poledouris 's death , the studios didn't remaster all his scores and didn't release them ... they have no respect for the artist or for the fans ...

Conan Score is probably the best of the 80's and the only good cd edition is out of print and the warner release is an insult to fans , the varese was the best , now if i want to listen to the score i have to put the dvd of the movie on , and that's too bad that there isn't a separate tracks who contains only the score on the dvd ...

lunar666, January 31, 2008; 3:17 PM

I cant see what all the fuss is about. If you are happy with the cd and the price you paid for it - all well and good. I recently bought the rejected score cd from Ransom; great sound, great cd -- I dont know who released it and dont much care. I like the music and if Varese or Intrada wont release it and someone else does, then, as a collector, I see that as a good thing. My only bugbear with some 'bootlegs' is the sound quality, which can be variable - but many that i have sound superb. I think the moralising over this issue is pointless given the society we live in and the boundary between legit and bootleg is very hazy.
I agree with many of 1701 comments - he makes a lot of sense.
