John Barry 'Last Valley' & Chat with composer
Having just bought Tickertape's release of 'The Last Valley' from fellow member Mr Baird am I correct in presuming that it is the same version as released by Intrada? And is the Silva Screen re-recording worth getting?
I thought this might interest the community. I recently had a visit from my best friend, a well known TV composer here in the UK - anyway we sat listening to soundtracks well into the early hours. I played him Don Ellis' French Connection - he sat there shaking his head in disbelief ' If I submitted this score tomorrow I would be laughed out of the room.' Other soundtracks from the 60's & 70's were also greeted with the same reaction. He said that today producers were not willing to take the same risks with composition and he envied the budgets that allowed composers to work with orchestras. He did however concede that Johnny Greenwood was given a lot of room to move with the score for 'There Will Be Blood'. As a working composer he really does not have the time or inclination to listen to soundtracks, so I've started to make him some mix CDs - mostly soundtrack selections for the car. I dunno how much they permeate his consciousness but it thrills me to think of scores like Ellis' French Connection triggering something fresh in his head that might materialise on the screen.

Yep, the Tickertape and the Intrada versions share the same content. The onyl difference is, that Intrada's release features a remarkably improved sound quality.
In my eyes, all of Silva's re-recordings of John Barry's scores are sheer crap. There is a completely different timing and phrasing which proves the mediocre quality of the conductor and the orchestra. I'm still puzzled, that Mr. Barry gave his permission for a production that doesn't do the slightest justice to his fantastic compositions.

Not very fond of the Silva re-recordings myself.

Thanks for the info - I'll stay clear of Silva's recordings of Barry.

The Silva re-recordings of Goldsmith I'm not too fond of either.

The Silva re-recordings of scores such as The Last Valley, Walkabout, Raise the Titanic & Robin and Marian are all excellent. I'm very surprised that anybody should think otherwise. JB himself thought the Last Valley re-recording was wonderful. Some of Silva's earlier Bond theme recordings, however, were not great.
