Question

Randall & Hopkirk

Hi, has anyone here bought the network release of Edwin Astley's Randall & Hopkirk? I read on some board that network's release of 'The Prisoner' was unlistenable due to the brevity of tracks and mish mash of styles and wondered if the same could be said for Randall & Hopkirk. Excepting Annette Andre, I never much cared for the show but the few samples on Movie Grooves tempts the ageing hipster in me to part with £30.00.
Thanks
Dominic

I have this 3-CD set and there is some similarities with THE PRISONER set: the tracks are quite short...>200 tracks on the 3 CDs!! And there is some variations in the style. But it's certainly not "unlistenable".

I haven't really watched the show since I was a kid, so I wouldn't call myself a fan. But Astley's main theme is great and I wanted to have more of his music to see how he varies this theme when used in the incidental music. There is some of that, but the whole set is quite interesting in terms of what Astley has done with a limited budget and restricted instrumentation.

It's probably a set that you could dip into every now and again rather than listen to from start to finish.

If you can spare the £30 I'd recommend it - even if it is just to show support for a label that is trying to provide access to some distinctive TV scores. Maybe they can do something similar with DEPARTMENT S at some point in the future.

Hope this helps.

I am thinking of either getting The Prisoner from Network or the other separate cd's. I hope Network is not unlistenable but I can understand the person who posted this. I have the Dark Shadows MPI release which has somethng like 500 tracks. One needs to play this using fade in/fade out to make it more enjoyable.

Graeme, I submitted this title for inclusion on the database a few weeks ago and am just waiting for it to appear. If I get the chance I'll update the entry with the 200+ tracks when it appears.

Cheers to the team for posting the Randall and Hopkirk release.

I've added the track listing - but it's not much use in terms of information as most cues are just cue numbers/takes.

One comment for this release is that the opening and closing titles are sourced from somewhere other than the sources for the other cues. And the sound quality is poorer than the good quality (considering when they were made) incidental tracks. In fact, I found better quality sources on YouTube for the opening/closing themes.

I've added descriptive track titles here and on the Gracenote CDDB database. It's a little better than reading the slate numbers.

Thanks Stephen for adding the descriptive titles to the entry - as you say, it's much better than the unhelpful titles I had.

I just wish I'd known you had these!! It took me ages to add what I'd done. ;)

If you don't mind I'll add them to my entry in my Orange CD database.

Thanks for the info. I must admit I am rather put off by the brevity of the tracks. I am not a huge fan of suites per say but methinks in this particular case this would have been the way to proceed - a shame Network didn't take a leaf out of FSM's book - I'm thinking of the 3 Volume Man From U.N.C.L.E. series . Nevertheless one can't help but applaud Network for the release - they are without a doubt the best company for re-releasing old shows on DVD.

BTW, you can order this 3-CD set direct from Network:
