Bernstein's True Grit
Hi, I've just purchased both DRG's & Tadlow's release of True Grit. Can anyone tell me how the version in which Bernstein conducts The Utah Symphony compare? Stats wise Bernstein & The Utah would (or at least should) have given a better reading than Fitzpatrick & The Prague. Purists may balk but aside from the dreadfull 'Rooster' & Campbell vocal I really like the original soundtrack - probably explains why I love MCQ so much.
Thank you
Dominic

Well, it's probably no surprise that Bernstein & The Utah Symphony sound a lot more like
Fitzpatrick and the Prague, than Bernstein with the Artie Butler arrangements. Funny
enough, I used to have the True Grit LP in the old days and rather liked it. So when I bought
the John Wayne CD of Bernstein & the Utah years later I was actually almost disappointed
that it sounded so different. But I got used to it too and now I am a big Bernstein fan. One of
the few scores that I don't have is McQ, so maybe I should try that one too. Any re-recording
by Bernstein is worth having by the way, because of the better sound quality (compared to
the old recordings). Since there are a couple more scores on the CD's with the Utah
Symphony I would definitely recommend them.

Thanks I'll search out the Bernstein re-release & yup MCQ is definitely worth tracking down.

Al Delory arranged the LP version of the "True Grit" score. It was recorded more as a pop version for the purpose of big record sales. I have a copy of it and have always felt that the cover design was the best thing about it. Elmer Bernstein conducts.
