Morricone's Space 1999...just plain bizarre

So what is the story behind Morricone's music for Spazio 1999 (Space 1999)? It is so crazy and bizarre that only Morricone could get away with something like this. So was this music actually used in the Italian version of the TV series?

I have posted the music on YouTube now that I figured out the trick to getting stereo sound on YouTube.

I enjoy the "Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza" recordings. His score for "Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura" is similar.

Had no idea Ennio Morricone scored the Italian version of "Space 1999".

That track I think is from 'Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura' or one of the many giallos Morricone scored but it was definitely not scored for Space 1999 - Italian programmers might well have 'borrowed' it for Space 1999 as they 'borrowed' John Barry for the The UFO Movie trailer -

Of course if I'm wrong someone please correct me

Well, the music is credited on the CD as the Main Title from Spazio 1999. It's also listed in his discography. It's just that it seems so out of place in a science fiction movie.

To get stereo sound on YouTube you need to encode the video in FLV (flash video) and upload it in that format. There are a few free FLV encoders around such as Riva. When encoding to FLV, the audio has to be MP3 with a bitrate of 128 and sampling rate of 44100 and the video bitrate has to be around 192 (which is pretty low for video, so the video quality is going to suffer somewhat). Video aspect ratio needs to be 4:3 and frame size needs to be 320 x 240. If you upload any other format besides FLV or go higher than these settings then YouTube will re-encode your whole clip into mono sound.

As I'm at work, I haven't access to my DVDs and info, but Space 1999 regardless of where it aired used a number of musical resources. You'll probably be aware of the Season One scores by Barry Gray, and the Season Two scores by Derek Wadsworth; Two very different composers, each giving a unique atmosphere distinguishing the two years.
Barry Gray was ill during the scoring of Season One so they filled in the gaps with existing music from libraries and classical compositions.
The Region Two DVD boxset of Season One (special edition) has isolated scores.

I'll have a watch of the YT vids when I get home and see what they are.

A further update. Space 1999’s first season was part financed by Rai Television. 3 episodes were edited together into a movie and screened in Italy. For some reason known only to Rai’s head honchos Barry Gray’s theme was dropped and replaced by the Morricone theme. The Morricone theme is similar to the many compositions he recorded with the ‘Gruppo Di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza’ – check ‘Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura’ or the ‘Crime & Dissonance’ comp. I’m specualating here, but I don’t believe that Morricone actually sat down and composed a theme specifically for Space 1999 but rather modified an alternate or unused pieced from a (then) current or previous score. Incidentally, The T.V. Series as shown in Italy had an identical score to the original with the exception of Season 2’s end titles which used the song ‘S.O.S. Spazio 1999’ sung by Oliver Onions.

That’s my 2 pence worth
Thanks

Hi, in Italy the SPACE:1999 series was aired in TV as in the rest of the world with the original Barry Gray and Derek Wadsworth music.

As you may know, in the 80's there was the habits in Italy to take some success TV series and to cut and paste them in order to create a product for the Cinema. Probably the producers at that time thought that TV rights did not pay enough...

Ennio Morricone’s music appears in one of this strange cinematographic version (that basically were the first three or four episodes) where the whole dialogues were rewritten (!!) the sequences re-cutted and re-edited, there was no Barry Gray music at all (the film is almost always in silence) and there are few ad-hoc track of Ennio Morricone. The overall effect is astonishing, and I could not say if the slow philosophical slide of the original dialogues and Gray music is better than this very sharp and dynamic narration. You will notice how all things that required 150 minutes on the original episodes to be told, are told in about half. I definitely like it. I like the Morricone's music that appears on the film (that is NOT the one posted on youtube) , and personally I do not know if it they come from other productions or it was composed for the film version.
The film was in Italian, sold by AVO Film. It is only available on VHS.
