Ecoutez Le Cinema
In case, some of you haven't noticed it yet, Universal France is about to release the next four
issues on June 2nd:
Serie Noire - A compilation of soundtracks for Jean-Pierre Melville movies.
Michel Legrand - La Piscine / Un Homme Est Mort / Un Peu De Soleil Dans L'Eau Froide
Georges Delerue - Jules et Jim / Les Deux Anglaises (JJ is the already well known 26 minute
suite!)
Michel Polnareff - Le Cinéma De Michel Polnareff
As for french soundtracks, DRG has announced the re-release of Maurice Jarre's Is Paris
Burning? (June 24th).

Thanks for the advance, Coma. The four Universal CDs sound really interesting.

- A compilation
- Three soundtracks that obviously cannot fit on one CD (due to the length vinyl releases)
- Two scores both already available on several different releases (JetJ especially)
- A compilation
...really that interesting?...
I take IS PARIS BURNING over all of the above. I don't know if it's just me but I still have to think that the French producer (Lerouge is that?) is either tied under a heavy contract from the label or a total amateur.

It all depends on your predelctions, Dorian.
Serie Noire contains a lot of material yet unreleased - Deuxième Souffle, Bob Le Flambeur, Un
Flic - and, as I love Melville movies, is my absolute favourite.
The Michel Legrand scores are unreleased on CD yet.
JetJ is widely available, yes. But LDA is not quite easy to get hold of, as the Hortensia release
is rare.
And as for Polnareff... ? A matter of taste, as always.
I'm very curious about the IPB? release too!

IS PARIS BURNING? has the same contents than the previous Varèse release, which I've already got. That's the point because the Universal releases are more interesting to me.
On the other hand, I think that the "Ecoutez le Cinema" collection is a great opportunity to take contact or get a deeper knowledge on french film music. I can only celebrate the efforts by Monsieur Lerouge. The entire collection is more than interesting; it is an invaluable heritage.
Thanks again, Coma

"La Piscine" (Michel Legrand) is an excellent score. I'm guessing it'll be a good seller. I once had a 16mm print of the film. The score is really good.

Hi Angel,
my sentiment is exactly the same as yours. I would never have gotten in touch with any of these French scores without the Écoutez le Cinéma series, in my mind the most beautifully crafted film music series of them all. Each release is an artwork in its own. The design is just overwhelming.

Just learned, that the Melville sampler will contain the unused score by Michel Legrand for Le
Cercle Rouge!

Indeed, The ECOUTEZ LE CINEMA is the most valuable serie of
French filmmusic, thanks to Stephane Lerouge. Without him was the
French soundtrack a desert in the filmmusiclandscape.
