buy it at your own risk. the score is a big dissapointment. it features no memorable theme, except the one we already now and which is heard only three times in the score.

believe me or not, the score has no serious williams writing we all expect and love. it is the worst score from all indy movies.

I had a chance to listen to the score for about 20 times. it has it's moments, yes, but too few and they are all too short.

there are too many comedy tracks you might expect from a cartoon ot comedy movie, e.g. "adventures of mutt", "the snake pit".

the undescore tracks are bad, believe me. the final features no climax, no big bang, big revelation or similiar.

what a waste of talent, what a dissapointment from a maestro, from a great composer of film music :(

@red.bprd

what did you expect.. Lucas itself said Indy 4 is a B-movie. ;)
and you can't expect Williams every time composing excellent scores, "John is gettin old". ;) <-- this means it's a JOKE, dudes! (sorry I forgot the smiley before)
No composer in history did this, every one has his ups and downs.

I listened now to the whole score - it isn't perfect but it still entertains.

But to claim it as a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT is just wrong.

I agree with 1701. I listened to it a couple of times (listening to it again right now) and I really like it. Maybe it is not as good as the other Indy scores (though personally I like this one more than Temple of Doom) but it is still a good score.

And maybe there isn't a big climax on the soundtrack because there isn't a big climax in the movie...(haven't seen it yet) or maybe Spielberg/Williams decided to leave (part of) the big climax unscored.

Getting old has nothing to do with writing good music. The score is not bad. It is okay. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing new because it has been done before but let's be real here. This is a sequel of a sequel of a sequel. It is better than some of the other scores that have come out recently.

Gotta pee pee.

serifiot, May 20, 2008; 6:26 PM

(serifiot) Exactly right about age having nothing to do with being unable to composer great music. The person who claims as much is a bigger fool than they will ever realize.

Armando Trovaioli has composed scores well into his 80's. His wisdom and experience cannot be matched. I guess the Italians don't easily discard people based upon age, as is so common with mainstream America.

If the new John Williams score isn't up to par with his better work, consider the material he's working with. It's not his fault he's expected to amuse the shit for brains of society.

So to the person who posted such a stupid narrow minded and typical comment. Get your facts straight dumbass. The older generation are to be learned from, not demeaned and rendered obsolete. As I'm sure John Williams realized in his younger years based upon the influence Erich Korngold had upon him as he scored "Star Wars".

@workingwithknives

jeez, pal... just calm down.
I guess I had have used a smiley behind "John's gettin' old" hu?
Or better yet I edit it right now so the next one won't whining about such things.

If you don't know about a person claiming such things than better be quiet, dumbass. You take such things too seriously.
I had hoped an intelligent person would understand this statement, that's because I used his first name "John" and not the complete one. I guess I was wrong about the intelligence. I'll do it better next time, I promise.

BTW: Of all the composers out there I respect Williams most. I have almost all of his recordings (even some in several forms). So much for this.

1701, May 20, 2008; 10:23 PM

Well if it sounds like a less than an enthusiastic score it's more than likely because John Williams felt less than enthusiastic about doing it. I don't care for many of the big budget scores he has composed and never have liked the "Indiana Jones" films.

Age doesn't mean less ability. It means more experience. The director of "Rush Hour" had to practically beg the producers to allow him to ask Lalo Schifrin to score the film. They felt he was too old for the job. As a matter of fact Lalo Schifrin is too good of a composer to have scored the film.

Take a look at the Home Page of this site, check out the '10 most popular scores' list at the
bottom right. Seven (!) scores by John Williams for blockbuster movies are listed here. Funny
though I am a big fan of John Williams, none of these Williams soundtracks in the top 10 do
much for me, least of all the 'Indy-score'. I like the JFK or Amistad type of scores much better.
Have to agree with Knives that 'Indy' films (and Star Wars) are best suited for people with
underdeveloped brains, but that has not much to do with the music. Although when I hate a
film I find it more difficult to love the soundtrack.

One of the composers who did great work at a ripe old age was Elmer Bernstein. Mostly the
films didn't deserve his huge talent, nevertheless Elmer couldn't help but write good music.

chris, May 21, 2008; 7:10 AM

Remember his music for Memoirs Of A Geisha? Surely one of his best scores ever and that was
only two years ago.

coma, May 21, 2008; 7:16 AM

underdeveloped brains???

yeah well, some another stupid statement by maybe an underdeveloped brain (sorry).

anyway, there is no use to fight about music whether it's good or bad.
Underdeveloped brain or people-with-over-altituded-level.

Williams is a master for its genre, so is another composer for another genre. Whether people like it or not, his music is simply the best for what it is. All his complexity (some may call it "too many notes") and all those beautiful themes he wrote.

And in the end it simply remains a "matter of taste".
You don't like it just don't listen to it. But to rate it as "underdeveloped" IS underdevolopted.

The reason I responded to this thread in the first place is probably more as a result of being pissed off by watching a few minutes of American television earlier in the day.

It's all geared towards the dumbest of the dumb. I ask myself... Are people actually stupid enough to buy into this horseshit?

victoravalentine, May 21, 2008; 9:27 PM

that's why I stopped watching TV about 7 years ago. No more shit!

The internet gives me what I want and movies I can watch on DVD. ;P

1701, May 21, 2008; 11:42 PM

'For people with underdeveloped brains' referred to the films with their uncomplicated/yet
incomprehensable stories. I said not one bad word about John Williams (on the contrary). As I
said the music has nothing to do with it. That's a matter of taste indeed. It was just my
personal opinion. Why are you people offended so easily??? I mean in general on this site.
Relax, get a life...

The Indy4 score album is worth the money for the cue "Call of the Crystal Skull" alone. Each to their own, I guess ;o)

richard_neal, May 22, 2008; 10:33 AM

It is worth getting because it is a John Williams score! :- )

serifiot, May 22, 2008; 6:21 PM

I've passed up several recent John Williams scores simpy because the films were just so sickening bad and mainstream I refuse to have anything to do with it.
