Question

What are you listening to right now? Comments?

Hello,

You know the drill.

In my cd changer right now.

1. "The Hustler" - Kenyon Hopkins (lp Transfer- Great jazz score from a great film - Hope its released on cd someday)
2. "The Collector" - Maurice Jarre (very subtle effective score, Mr. Jarre is one of my favorites)
3. "Untamed" - Franz Waxman (I give it 4 stars)
4. "Jaws 3-D" - Alan Parker (Great score - Bad movie)
5. "Battle of Neretva" - Bernard Herrmann (Underrated Herrmann score - I give 5 stars)
6. "Omar Khayyam" - Victor Young (would love to see a remastered cd release on this wonderful score)

Your turn- Thank you

Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

Answers

"Three and Out" - Trevor Jones (has some great uplifting tracks)
"Surf's Up" -Mychael Danna (I just love this score - so charming)
"Stargate: The Ark of Truth" -Joel Goldsmith (OK score, and you can hear a slight shadow of his father on this one)
"Planet Earth" -George Fenton
"Bee Movie" -Rupert Gregson-Williams (good for a sunny walk)
"Amistad" -John Williams
"Kilimanjaro: to the Roof of Africa" -Alan Williams (excellent)

What a mix this week! Guess I'll be spinning that Indy CD soon...

Johnny

Wonder Boys - Christopher Young (my favorite CY score)
The Cooler - Mark Isham (great movie/great score)
One From The Heart - Tom Waits (my only complaint with this cd is Little Boy Blue is not
the Nastassia Kinski version)
The Vanishing - Jerry Goldsmith
The Paper (score promo) - Randy Newman (great movie/great score)

My current rotation of recent purchases:

• A BOUT DE SOUFFLE (Martial Solal)* - A nice and pleasant listen of jazz scores from 1959-1961, but sometimes I'd wish for more drama.
• SUDDEN IMPACT (Lalo Schifrin) - Solid, more listenable than Schifrin's two previous Dirty Harry soundtrack CDs, but the CD suffers from not including the end title (vocal) song.
• DERNIER DOMICILE CONNU - LE RAPACE (François de Roubaix)*
• LE REPOS DU GUERRIER / BARBARELLA (Michel Magne)* - very diverse collection of 5-6 Magne scores. While the rejected Barbarella score was previously never released, I tend to like the more conventional brief score excerpts in the previous tracks on this CD more.
• LA GRANDE LESSIVE / L'ETALON (François de Roubaix)* - This has now become my favourite of this batch. La grande lessive has a highly memorable and catchy main theme and it gets several nice variations in the first tracks of the CD.
• MIREILLE MATHIEU SINGT ENNIO MORRICONE - Once you overcome the initial reluctance to MM (she became an icon of cheesy kitsch music in Germany when I was a little boy), this CD of vocalizations of Morricone's themes becomes similarly enjoyable as Dulce Pontes' "Focus" CD.
• CAPTAIN FUTURE (Yuji Ono/Etsuko Yamakawa) - Not as irresistible as Bruhn's score for the German version, but still a nice and easy animation score listen.

Have a nice day,

Urs

* These CDs all appeared in the magnificent "Écoutez le Cinéma" series from Universal Music France/Emarcy

Right now on heavy rotation is

Jellysmoke - Peter Calandra (Gets better each time you listen to it and reminds me of Shade
by Christopher Young)

Only interrupted from time to time by

Scenes Of The Crime - Christopher Young

Cheerz,

David

"Shackleton" (Adrian Johnston)
Funny, I bought this CD because you (David) said you liked it so much in a previous 'what are
you listening to now' listing. I also bought it a because I like stories like this one. I was lucky
to find an 'almost normal' priced copy on Amazon used.

"The Lost Prince" (Adrian Johnston)
I bought this because I liked Shackleton so much, in fact I also bought Jude, Becoming Jane,
Friends and Crocodiles and All the King's Men because I liked Adrian Johnston so much. I
hope his new score for Brideshead Revisited will also be released on CD. The CD of the TV-
version with music by Burgon has been one of my all time favorite scores for years. It will be
a tough act to follow but I have a lot of confidence in this composers abilities.

"Wild Caribbean" (David Lowe)
Nice Caribbean-flavoured score for the BBC natural history documentary series. Better than I
expected when I ordered it (I don't usually like most Caribbean music). Flamingo Sunset is
truly beautiful and so is Reef Wonderland. These alone are worth the price.

"Poirot" (Christopher Gunning)
Always nice to hear this music.

"Martin Chuzzlewit" (Geoffrey Burgon)
The more I play this the more I like it. It kind of grows on you slowly.

"Solisterrae" (Pascal Gaigne)
Like most of the work by this composer, excellent. A break from all the British Television
music that I've been listening to.

Just popped Indy 4 in.

"Operazione Mitra" (Mario Nascimbene). This music would have more than likely been lost if not for the Beat label.

Genso Suikoden - Celtic Collection 2 (very beautiful game music compilation)

Listening to

McLintock
Krakatoa - East of Java
Star Trek III
Escape To Victory

I like to listen to different styles. Keeps it interesting.

1) State Of Siege - Mikis Theodorakis. Overall disappointing, one great track. My disappointment has been heightened by the discovery of Theodorakis' anti-semetic comments.
2) Elmer Bernstein - Rage In Harlem. Overlooked and under appreciated.
3) i Marc 4 - not a soundtrack per say though it does feature one of Italy's best composers Armando Trovajoli. Highly recommended if you can get your hands on this.
4) Superuomini Superdonne Superbotte - Franco Micalizzi. Utterly insane use of funk in a movie set in the middle ages.
5) Missione Speciale Lady Chaplin - Bruno Nicolai. A fabulous 007 inspired score.

Thanks
Dominic

Deep Impact - James Horner

Far from his best / my favourite ... it is a little slow in development but there are some nice melodies in there, leading to another JH wonderful finale.

It is good to see a favourable comment above re: Missione Speciale Lady Chaplin - Bruno Nicolai as I've been thinking of buying this one.

Hello,

Thank you all for answering my post. I see alot of scores mentioned I have never heard of, I'd like to check some of them out.

To couvee: I'm glad you like the "Shackleton" score I had mentioned in a past posting. I think Adrian Johnston is very underrated.

I hope you guys don't mind me listing this question a couple times a month. I really like reading your responses.

Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

Is there anywhere that I can listen to samples from the Shackleton score you mentioned?
