Music to remember SYDNEY POLLACK
Director Sydney Pollack died in Los Angeles on monday 26. We can remember some of his movies thanks to the music that was written for them. I specially love the score John Barry composed for OUT OF AFRICA, but there are other great soundtracks you can find in his filmography. Among my favourites are:
- THE SCALPHUNTERS (Elmer Bernstein)
- THE SWIMMER (Marvin Hamlisch)
- THE YAKUZA (Dave Grusin)
- THE FIRM (Dave Grusin)
And the score I want the most to see released on compact disc is JEREMIAH JOHNSON, by John Rubinstein.
What about you? Which ones are your favourite soundtracks for the films of Sydney Pollack?
Regards,
Angel

All the scores that you mentioned, especially the Barry (of course) and the Bernstein. The score for The Swimmer was also a major revelation. However my favorite film involving Mr. Pollack is Husbands and Wives.

Three Days Of The Condor, another fine Dave Grusin score.

Isn't putting THE SWIMMER in there a little bit extreme? Pollack is not credited for it, and from what I read, he only shot one scene.
Did he take care of the post-production and pick or work with the composer?
That would make it a valid choice, I guess...
Unfortunately, none of his films appeal to me as soundtracks go, and I've listened to a few.
Even OUT OF AFRICA bores me...
RIP all the same.

That's right Fireatheart, THE SWIMMER is not strictly a Sydney Pollack movie. In fact he is believed to have directed only one scene (in my humble opinion, not precisely the best one). I've included it in my list because Pollack was somehow involved in direction duties, and because he later had some professional relationship with the composer: Marvin Hamlisch wrote both the winning score and song from THE WAY WE WERE. Besides that, I think THE SWIMMER has a wonderful soundtrack.
Cheers,

Tootsie is the one for me - a great, classic film with a warm, funny score from Dave Grusin. I even like the songs!
A close second is Out Of Africa followed by John Williams' Sabrina.
RIP Sydney, a great actor and director.

I like the "Tootie" score although the title song makes me cringe.
"3 Days Of The Condor" from Dave Grusin. Love it!

It's a real shame SYDNEY POLLACK died. He was a great talent both behind and in front of the camera. Here are my suggestions for music to remember Sydney Pollack by:
OUT OF AFRICA (of course)
THE FIRM
CASTLE KEEP (not sure if this is available or not)
JEREMIAH JOHNSON (again - not sure if this is available or not)
SABRINA
And to reflect the films in which POLLACK was an actor, not a director:
EYES WIDE SHUT (why not?) In fact to quote Sydney's last line of dialogue in that film (to Tom Cruise): "Life goes on. It always does. Until it doesn't".
