Question

Dead Calm & The Shining soundtracks Officially released?

Does anyone know why Warners didnt/ havnt released Dead Calm (1989)and The Shining (1980) on CD yet as these are very popular scores and they would sell loads of copies if released properly.
I have Dead Calm but its the CD-R version and i have The Shining on LP and Wendy Carlos Lost Scores 1&2 and the music of Stanley Kubrick which has some tracks from the film.
Does Dead Calm actually exist on an offical format? I did see a Dead Calm CD (NOT THE CD-R EITHER) one on ebay recently but only after it was sold (and now i cant find it because its delted from ebay records) and now i cant save the pics for reference.

Thanx in advance!

Hi Darren!

No, Dead Calm has never been offically released. Also, there is no other recording available at all than the one CDR that is floating around with various designs.

According to a conversation with Brian "Lustmord" Williams (who was Revell's sound designer for ages) there does not seem to be another recording of the Dead Calm score other than this less-than-perfect cassette dub.

On the "official" Promo "Film Music" that was sent out to interested parties by Revell's agency at the time there is one Dead Calm track (actually the End Titles) and it's the very same source (with sub-par audio quality - typical "muffled" tape sound).

Even though it's a short score that one would be on the very top of my wish list since I saw the movie in the cinema when it came out!!!

As for the Shining, there are many, many, many references on the net as to where to find all the tracks contained in the film. If you have the original LP and the Carlos CDs, you have the most important tracks. The remaining songs and orchestral works have been released in various formats all over the globe.

There will never be a "complete" soundtrack of all music heard and unheard in the film, as the various copyrights are all over the place. Of course, that is just my humble opinion ;-)

As to why Dead Calm never received an offical soundtrack release, that beats me totally. Must have been legal issues/fees that didn't compare to the reception of the film when it opened theatrically. As far as I know, Revell even got an award for this score in Australia...

Dead Calm is always my first hope when it comes to limited / club editions from labels like Intrada, Varèse, Buysondtrax, La-La Land etc.

Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Best,
Burnie

Thanks for the response and great answer.

So the Dead Calm release i seen on ebay was a bootie then?

I agree it really is a puzzler why it wasnt released even on LP! I think this the first ambient soundtrack that i really loved and still do. I got my CD-R/Bootleg yesterday its great. Do you have the CD-R then? Listening to the soundtrack makes me want to watch the film again as i really love the film too. Maybe one day it will see an official release!

As for the Shining i live in hope for a full expanded official release someday i think i seem to recall thats why we havnt seen an official release of it on CD yet and very sadly probably never will. I would of thought it would make fiancial sense for it to be released as it would be a big moneyspinner once all the copyrights were sorted out. There are lots of bootlegs available.

Yes, the one you saw on eBay was a boot. I have seen it as well. The score is great! I remember watching the film on the big screen and the impression the score had on me from the start. The film is good too and the underlying score fits like a glove. Who would have thought that the unrecognizable and beautiful redhead in the leading role would become the glamorous Kidman the whole world is familiar with.

BTW, the Wendy Carlos Lost Score cd's are tops!

I would not lose hope. One never knows.

PS

I think there might be different versions floating around. Just curious, how many tracks on ''Dead Calm'?

11 tracks

They're all the same, just the indexing differs. Mine has 9 tracks, but the back cover lists 11 tracks. Tracks 3, 4 and 5 only have one index, which is better, i think.

My copy didn't have track titles, so I made them up myself:

1. Opening / Sorrow
2. Cargo Revealed
3. Rae's Despair
4. Changing Course
5. Breaking Free
6. Cast Adrift
7. Rescue
8. Reunited
9. Flare-up / Epilogue

Best,
Burnie

There's actually a couple of fan compilations out there of ALL the music from The Shining that were put together (I have both of them). One has all the music selections in their entirety, and the other features the music edited to be as they were heard in the film itself.....so even though there's no official release, there already are two complete SHINING compilations around.
