Question

varese sarabande logo

Hi e' r'body.
I was looking at the cover of the new Elmer B. CD on the VS label. Varese has been using that logo since day one.
Does anybody know: Just What Exactly Is That A Picture Of?
It kind of looks like a grand piano that has sustained serious vandalism.

I've been wondering for years. Someone once said it's an ink blotch on a piece of paper.

I once saw an early Varese LP with the logo turned sideways. It resembled a mosquito shortly after being doused with Raid.

It's probably the best kept secret in the whole music industry. And Varèse refuses to answer
any questions concerning their logo. My, what a mystery!

To me it looks like some type of a bird, perhaps a peacock, nibbling bird seeds or whatever peacocks eat.

Strictly for the birds!

Could it be that Varese doesn't know what it is themselves? Probably just some cool design a guy did for 'em.

Hello.
I once read an interview with someone related to Varèse (perhaps Bob Townson..., I don't remember). He stated it was an ink stain after being blown. Simple.

Whatever it is, it's damn cool.

I remember the first time I saw it. The first Varese Sarabande recording I purchased is "Martin", the George Romero film. The entire cover grabs a person by the throat. The vampire kid with blood all over his chops and the arm of a dead woman in his hands. The cover makes a strong impression yet the logo stands its ground by making its own proud little statement up there in the corner.

That's funny...

My very first impression (my first Varèse was the Dawn Of The Dead LP) was the peacock also (but the legs didn't match up).

I've also wondered for years, until I read that nobody really knows, including the Varése guys.

The ink stain makes sense. All i know is that (i think it was Townson) Varèse said they refer to it as "The Bug".

Best,
Burnie

P.S. You're absolutely right, wwk, Martin is an incredibly striking LP cover - that one was also one of my first Varése LPs...

I've never heard from anyone what it actually is, but ever since I first saw the logo years and
years ago to me it looked like a grand piano too. Somehow I made that association in my mind
and it stuck. I think it really stands out as logo's go and it is instantly recognizable. As a kid I
used to blow through a straw on inkblots and got similar patterns so that may well have been
it's origin. Maybe it's just that and it represents nothing. Or perhaps it's a Rorschach test and
you should see the portrait of Edgar(d) Varèse in it.

One time, when i was about to prepare a meal, i poured some cooking oil in a pan. Once it had heated up, i tilted the pan left and right, up and down to spread it about and guess what? The Varese logo was staring right back at me.

Were any of the varese founders cookery fans???

It's sort of like the mystery of the shreaks in the "Psycho" shower scene. Someone said backward violins, someone else said birds at a faster playback speed and then Bernard Herrmann says, it's what every violinist does before playing... Tuning the strings.

Dexter Morgan might know.
