Recommended... ECOUTEZ LE CINEMA???

hI!

ELC cd's I guess are one good way to get acquainted with French film music. There are so many ELC cd's and hopefully many still in print and plenty left of each cd release to go around.

I would like some friendly advice on your recommended (or even not so recommended) list of ELC releases.

I would prefer complete score title cd's but nerve wrecking compo cd's with bits and pieces of score titles here and there are okay as well if the complete score titles cannot be found anywhere else.

I do have a few titles but I would like to get more.

ThanX!

Hi serifiot,

I guess we share a fondness of funk/disco 1970s scores, so you might already have Écoutez le Cinéma's Michel Colombier triple feature CD L'HÉRITIER / LE HASARD ET LA VIOLENCE / L'ALPAGUEUER. It's still my favourite release from ELC and among my top 5-10 movie soundtracks of all times.

For a more traditional and recommendable jazz score, try MORT D'UN POURRI (Philippe Sarde).

For a more diverse and upbeat CD, I recommend LA FOLIE DES GRANDEURS.

Two wonderfully melancholic scores by François de Roubaix: L'AVENTURIERS / LE SAMOURAI.

I will probably remember more titles soon, but I think I'll stop here. :-) Too bad you have these problems with amazon marketplace - many ELC titles have been offered there very cheap recently.

In addition to Urs' list, I can only add my favorites:

Eric Demarsan - Le Cercle Rouge
Eric Demarsan - L'Armée des Ombres
Francois de Roubaix - Dernier Domicile Connu / Le Rapace
Jimmy Smith - La Métamorphose des Cloportes
Georges Delerue - L'Homme de Rio / Les Tribulations d'un Chinois en Chine
Georges Delerue - Le Polar selon Georges Delerue

I'm sure, if you'll wait a short while, you'll find the complete roster listed here. ;)

Btw, all titles of the series are still in print!

PS: Shame on me, how could I dare to forget to mention the recent Melville compilation, Le
Cercle Noir!

By the way, it can be a hassle to find a complete list of all titles, so if you need it, just email me, I typed them all together in a two page Word or PDF file recently. My list includes the regular soundtrack releases as well as all the compilations.

"regular soundtrack releases as well as all the compilations"

I imagine this would be approx. 1 : 20 rate.

So much work, Urs. And what for? Any CD includes a sheet with the complete list to date.

And then there's still this site:

www.amazon.fr/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000094853 (copy and remove the
semicolon!)

;))

Guys, thanks so far!!!... I am rushing things a bit.

Okay... that is great!

I wanted to see a complete list just like that. 13 euro is not cheap. I purchased the few ELC's I have for like half this price, brand new.

What happened to Universal's own website? Everything was listed even though not for sale anymore.

Urs I will email you... soon. Yes, funk and disco are great! Depending on my mood of course, I also enjoy lush and melodic scores. Burlusque music type of scores as well. Bing bang boom scores on occassion.

Francis Lai's BILITIS for some reason comes to mind which is very pleasant.

I am throwing things here. I will log in later on... or tomorrow.

Have to go.

Okay... this is where SC's database came in handy. Going through my collection, I honestly don't have too many ELC titles. I thought I had just a few more. I certainly will consider your recommendations in my next purchase of ELC cd's.

I have so much catching up and so many questions regarding French film scores... and movies (why not?) for that matter!

In any case, for the record (my record) and going by # which at the moment it is easier for me to remember, I have...

# 17 Papillon - Jerry Goldsmith (off course!)

# 18 Les Tontons Flingueurs / Ne Nous Fachons Pas / Les Barbouzes - Michel Magne, Bernard Gerard

# 22 A Bout De Souffle - Martial Solal

# 29 Cannabis / Ce Sacre Grand-Pere - Serge Gainsbourg, Jean-Claude Vannier, etc.

# 30 Police Python 357 / L'important c'est d'aimer - Georges Delerue

# 31 Compartiment Tueurs / De La Part De Leur Copains - Michel Magne

# 35 Serie OSS 117 - Michel Magne

# 36 Les Aventuriers / Le Samourai - Francois De Roubaix

# 45 The Hunter (Ler Chasseur) / Le Mans - Michel Legrand (non-digi)

Le Cinema De Philippe De Broca - 1969-1988, music by Georges Delerue

Le Cinema De Philippe De Broca - 1959-1968, music by Georges Delerue

Le Monde Electronique De Francois De Roubaix, Volume 1

I could have sworn I had more. I think staring at some ELC titles on my PC screen has confused me and made me think I have them.

In any case, it's been quite a while since I played the ones I do have.
Distinctively, I remember liking the Solal cd and Michel Magne. I guess that is why I have purchased a few more Magne and Francois De Roubaix as well. I enjoyed his electronique stuff on his compo album.
As far as Delerue... I cannot remember. I think they are still sealed and certainly time to unseal them and spin them in my cd player.

David, the link you provided is absolutely wonderful because I can sample the music. Thanks many times over!
Even though worldly Amazon cannot sell me items from third party sellers since I live in this little and unkown, uninhabited island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean... I'll have my way somehow.

Cheers for now & pleasant film score dreams!

Mmm... that online list of ELC is not complete. the Manon 70 score by Gainsbourg is
missing.

my recommendations from the ELC vaults:

Both these Gainbourg releases: Manon 70 and Cannabis
The 2 electronic François de Roubaix compilations
the 'Samouraï' score by F. De Roubaix
'Bandes Originales Des Films De Philippe Labro' by Michel Colombier
The music for 'Trafic' by Charles Dumont is special to me. I keep playing that one...

Looking forward to this 'Serie Noire': compilation of J.P. Melville movies... i want to hear
those Cercle Rouge rejects.

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned Martial Solal.

"Bout De Souffle" (aka "Breathless"), the one I have, I don't think is in the list.

The sort of upbeat and jazzzzzzy sample tracks are available at the following link for those who might be... a bit curious.

i second Solal's A bout de Souffle score.

Plain jazz without the boring solos. functional and great.

'Plein Soleil' by Nino Rota is a historic release. Great film too!
