THE OMEGA MAN reissued!
Yes, it's true. Ron Grainer's THE OMEGA MAN is being re-released by FSM as an unlimited edition. Same content but with improved sound and different cover art.
It's great that this wonderful score can be owned by more soundtrack aficionados.

Angel

It's not 'April Fool's Day' yet Angel... or is it?
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
Probably the most expensive score I have. The first was literally a pirated cd in all its glory and which I paid good money for (that is how I got into SC's forum... if some of you recall a few years ago from seller microprovincia or whatever his f....ken eBay ID was) and then another copy (authentic this time) a bit later from another seller which is still sealed since I kept playing the pirated one all the time. Great score but got screwed big time. This proves the old adage good thing come to those who wait... BUT I WANT IT NOW!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm pissed! So much for limited releases. I want all the old batch of Varese cd club releases to get rereleased for compensation... NOW!
I'm damn mad but I should be glad for the one's who never got this. Get it now. It's a good score.
:p

No printed liner notes and yet this is fantastic news. :-)
Three cheers for Lukas!

Improved sound? My question is why could'nt they improve the sound first time round? Happy that people can get a copy without being screwed on eBay but I wont be biting on this one.
gerry.hill, October 20, 2008; 5:36 PM

Why the downloadable version?
We are heading that way faster than I thought.
Double mad now!
serifiot, October 20, 2008; 5:39 PM

Hi
Serifiot, this is a real CD, not a downloadable version.
Look here: http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=10751
I'm sorry to hear about your experience purchasing the original CD for an insane amount of money. This happens from time to time. I did the same purchasing the original RUNAWAY just a few days before Varèse released the DeLuxe edition (after that, I decided I wouldn't do the same with LINK). I felt like an idiot, but these are the perils of collecting.
Anyway, I think it's good news that some sold out limited editions are being re-released with unlimited quantities. Speculators mustn't be very glad. Read what Mr. Kendal says:
"This historic reissue of The Omega Man (FSMCD Vol. 3, No. 2) features a newly reconstructed master and is (at significant cost to us) an unlimited edition for the collectors—we could not stand by and watch clowns selling CD-Rs on eBay of our out-of-print disc and do nothing to stop it!"
Well done, Lukas!

Angel

You are right Angel. The liner notes are downloadable. For a minute, I thought the score was downloadable as well. Just checked.
Okay, okay... I'll probably get this release as well. The sound is improved and the cover image much better but at least they could have made it expanded. There might not have been more music available but FSM could have figured out some extras like... trailer music or something.
BTW, this is the third time this release has been made available through FSM. Is this a sign of desperation?
I have a feeling that OOP FSM scores sooner or later will be rereleased. At least FSM should rerelease them with more music this time around.
So much for limited titles! What a ridiculous yet ingenious marketing ploy.

So far, they have never rereleased any of their limited titles except for Pelham but in this case the second Retrograde release was different. The original cover art way much better!
As a last note, the Omega Man film is quite entertaining as well! I think I will watch this now.
I'm cooling off a bit... forums can be quite cathartic!

I remember watching "The Omega Man" when it was first released. My brother and I often went to the drive-in theatres around that time. I remember one scene in particular; Charlton Heston sitting in a theatre watching "Woodstock" time and again. I believe he was thinking to himself and complaining about that being the only film available.
I like the old Vincent Price film version of the book "Last Man On Earth".
Speaking of "Taking Of Pelman..."; Does anyone know what the story is behind the vinyl release of that score on "Retrograde"? Is it a bootleg? "Simply Vinyl" released a LP pressing in the UK awhile back. I have a Retrograde pressing with the same cover as the CD. The back of the jacket has no production credits. The sound quality is exceptional.

YESSSSS!! There's still justice in this world! Now i can finally own this jewel of a film score. And for a reasonble price.....
philkws, October 21, 2008; 1:45 PM

Cool news indeed! I can understand that a lot of people who were shelling out large amounts of
money for this one are pissed off now. But I'm quite amused how pissed off those retailers will
be who tried to push their profits to infinity.
@ knives: The Retrograde LP as well as the CD are composer promos.
coma, October 21, 2008; 4:14 PM

Killer knives... perhaps Heston was mumbling and talking to himself about Woodstock being the only film available but I got the impression that he was watching this particular film out of the countless of films he could have had access to simply because he was very lonely. Lots of people together having a good time, music playing, etc. and most important... I think the director was trying to make a statement and chose 'Woodstock' in a symbolic sense. Love & peace, etc. which was in contradiction to what Heston was facing all alone in this hellish world he was living in as the last survivor of a great human catastrophic holocaust together with those creatures that were after his life.
BTW, I have to check out that Vincent film. I might have watched it. Not sure. Such a theatrical actor. Great voice!
This particular original Retrograde Pelham cd and the LP (to my great suprise!) which I spotted only once accidentally and nearly fainted and made it my own have such cool covers! I just wanted to have that great LP cover to perhaps display and frame it. The other posted here on SC's database (sort of red) has a cool cover as well but this paricular Retrograde one is the best which looks like something from a comic book. I don't care to much for the cover on the cd release that followed. It looks kind of washed out.
I never thought the Pelham Retrogrades were composer promos as mentioned by coma. Are you certain David? I thought they were the first or one of the first cd's by FSM (and only LP?) under a different name like that other title they had released Monster something under the Retrogarde label. I cannot recall the full title now. Didn't Percepto release that as well?
Why is it that Shire has not released anything else under that Retrograde label if it was a composer promo's label? Surely the man has composed great scores that have not seen the light of day.
In any case, the positive side of this rerelease of Omega is of course the sound quality which is evident from the sample tracks and the cover which is better than the original but why didn't FSM provide us with this sound quality from the beginning?
Anyway, it is a good thing because a lot of people will finally get the chance to listen to this great score without having to pay a ridiculous price on eBay to acquire it and most important, it will hopefully evaporate all those bootlegs that were/are floating around as well.
serifiot, October 21, 2008; 4:50 PM

I also paid well over £120 (~$200) for this score.
But do you know what?
Im going to buy this new FSM version as well.
Great score, great people at FSM.
Let's keep supporting them!

@ seri: Retrograde is not a label for promotional releases only. But Pelham's back cover reads
"..promotional use only. Not for public sale." That's not unusual if you think of the promos
which have been released by Intrada (Christopher Young) and Prometheus (Ken Thorne).

AWESOME new sound and some new tracks as well. I emailed EVERY RECORD COMPANY (esp. the little black and white magazine: Film Score Monthly) to produce THE OMEGA MAN as a CD in the mid-1990s (other people must've as well) . . . AND FINALLY IN 1999 or 2000 I was holding The Omega Man soundtrack cd in my hands the week it came out. I have an INSANE attraction to this movie (I think watching it with my brother in 1976-7 drove me crazy-- TERRIFIED . . .at aged 6).
The Omega Man is the best soundtrack and the best movie ever made; and that's a statement. Omega Man 2.0 has material not on the 2000 edition and the 2000 edition has material not on the 2.0 edition. Don't spend a dime on pirated discs. . . download them using 'share.com 'upload.com. Omega Man 2.0 is the first cd I've bought in two years; download soundtracks and users now include scanned covers and liner notes as well in .rar files!!!!! THANK YOU LUKAS KENDALL for listening and remaking this cd
