Question

Just Plain Right I tells ya!

So following on from my last post (and thanks for the interesting responses), here is the
flipside...

Which projects do you wish had had a certain composer scoring them? Who would have been
the best/dream match of film and composer?

Obviously I wish Barry had scored FYEO and Goldeneye (or even Danny Arnold for Goldeneye
since Barry was effectively done with Bond by then and Arnold was about to take over)

Any others? I imagine there's a bunch of A films we wish Jerry Goldsmith had had a shot at
(did ever a composer do better work for lesser films - The Swarm and King Solomon's Mines
spring to mind).

Maybe composers who were approached but unavailable/uninterested/unaffordable?

Anyway, over to you.

"Danny Arnold"?

Davids brother perhaps?

It's a known fact that Paul Verhoeven always wanted to work with Jerry Goldsmith, but couldn't afford him during his early Hollywood career.
Don't think he would've done a better job than Basil on RoboCop though.

I think it's a shame Cronenberg couldn't(?) bring in Howard Shore for "The Dead Zone". I guess the studio wouldn't hear of it.
Anyone know the story behind this?

"Total Recall" is a Paul Verhoven film.

The problem I have with the Varese Sarabande recording of that score is "Schwarzenegger" in large letters across the top of the front cover and at the bottom in small print, "Jerry Goldsmith". Bothers the hell out of me.

I'd most likely never watch an Arnold Schwarzenegger film. I bought the recording for the Goldsmith music.

I also wish that John Barry had scored every single 007 outing, and was still doing so. I wish he'd do anything. Get well JB....

Although not specific to a certain movie, I wish Bernard Herrmann had lived a couple of more decades, and enjoyed his career resurgence. Even though Barry is my "Zeus", I think Herrmann was pound for pound, the greatest. John Williams' "Jaws" is a truly great score. In a parallel universe somewhere, wouldn't you love to hear how Herrmann would have done that movie?

It's sometimes hard to reconcile that John Barry scored films like "Howard the Duck" and "Starcrash" (!!) Goldsmith scored "Supergirl" and "Rent A Cop" as well as the ones you've mentioned. The film industry is bizarre.

Hello,

Not sure which films I would choose, But I wish that John Scott would have been hired to score more big budget and higher quality films in his career. He has created some great music for some really bad films.

Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

I wish Paul Giovanni would have scored more films.
And Peer Raben should have scored bigger films following Fassbinder's death.

Oops! Yes I did confuse David Arnold with his lesser known twin brother Danny.

Danny also scores films but doesn't get the big movies David does. You might know his work
in:

Starfence
Lincoln's Birthday
Mothra - The Return
Tomorrow Occasionally Dies
The World is Frankly Enough
Die Today
7-11 Royale
A Reasonable but not Excessive Amount of Solace.

For those who spits on non-Barry bond scores, they now have a perfect name: DAVID ARNOLD. QUANTUM OF SOLACE and CASINO ROYALE are nothing but loud noises, no melody and long pieces that go nowhere. The better music is a few seconds long only ! I wonder in what condition you can listen to these scores without stress ! Where is the fantasy, the dream, the love theme, good instrumentation you had in the 70's ? By listening the last scores you wonder , is it the end of the world !!!!

I am a Bond fan and soundtrack fan since 1973, so i have a good idea of James Bond music. There is a difference between Barry and the others but different do not mean better. Is red better looking than blue ? For me the best are LIVE AND LET DIE, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN and THE LIVING DAYLIGHGTS! Also, GOLDENEYE is not the worst people like to point out, the last 2 are certainly the ones. Maybe it's the actor that does not help, is no james bond, he's a DIE_HARD kind of blue color.

So it's just plain right that you're wrong. All you do is you give your opinion and it's all it is: your opinion...sorry my friend

Whoa, take a chill pill, friend.

If you look back over this and other posts you'll see that everything here is simply offered as
opinion. Except when someone seems to to think they alone have all the answers.

If you like those non-Barry scores then buddy, play them til the cows come home. If you
dislike Arnold with a passion then hey, stay away from them. Live and let live, to coin a
phrase.

Does everyone else have to be wrong for you to have your opinion?

Let's try to remember it's film music we're talking about, not the meaning of life (which by
the way had a fun soundtrack).

I KNOW ITS JUST FOR FUN. I HAVE FUN BECAUSE I LIKE FILM MUSIC EVEN IF MANY MANY DON' T . I DON'T UNDERSTAND PEOPLE WHO ARGUE FOR QUALITY MUSIC, I, MOST OF THE TIME, DO IT WITH PEOPLE WHO LIKE RAP, POP OR WHATEVER CRAP. WE ARE IN THE SAME TEAM. I JUST WANT TO TELL THE MAJORITY THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO LIKES SOMETHING ELSE. BY THE WAY, I LOVED JOHN BARRY'S MUSIC ALSO, EVEN MORE THAN MANY . YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THAT ARNOLD'S MUSIC IS NOT AS ACCESSIBLE. DON'T YOU THINK IT'S FUN TO HAVE A DIFFERENT VISION OF THE JAMES BOND WORLD ? I LIKE TO HAVE A FRESH, NEW VISION. EVEN IF BARRY IS PERFECT, I LIKE TO EAR SOMETHING ELSE. I KNOW YOU WILL SAY THAT OTHERS ARE AWFUL. I'M SORRY BUT THE ONLY REALLY BAD SCORE IS DR. NO. NO ?

SEE YOU MY FRIEND
