Jesus of Nazareth by Jarre, soundproblem on Cinephile
I saw that 'Gesu de Nazareth' by Maurice Jarre was released in Italy on RCA OST 131. I have
this score as a re-release on Cinephile from the UK but the sound is rather bad. Not that it's
not clear, but it is as if the tape doesn't run at a constant speed. The best way to describe it is
when you have a record with a hole that's not exactly in the middle. I sometimes had records
like that and the needle in the groove moves sideways and it sounds awful. You can hear this
also on releases of very old scores like the release of 'The Egyptian' on FSM in certain places.
On Jesus of Nazareth the track 'Baptism' (track 4) is an example where you can hear this
distortion in sound. The beginning of 'Jairus' Daughter' (track 5) is another good example of
bad sounding music. I wonder if it's just the Cinephile CD that has this flaw or that the RCA
CD has the same source/problem. Can anyone confirm this?

I can't comment on the Cinephile issue, but the RCA issue was mastered from a vinyl record. It isn't too bad, but if you have a good audio system you can hear a few soft thumps and such associated with playing vinyl. Maybe the Cinephile issue is mastered from the same source.

Thanks for the answer. I wasn't aware that these releases could be vinyl transfers. Gosh, that
explains a lot I guess. Is this another example of lost original session tapes? I hope not, in fact I
was hoping for an expanded remastered release one of these days. That seems a remote chance
if they can't even release a proper CD-version. :-(

I have the Cinephile issue now. Both are from different sources because the RCA issue has the Beatitudes dialogue spoken in Italian whereas the Cinephile issue is in English.
I believe someone mentioned that the master tapes for this, The Bride and Max Mad: Beyond Thunderdome are located in London in a storage chamber below Heathrow airport and someone is working on getting expanded releases for these. Don't know what progress is being made.

Wow! If this is true it's really something to look forward to. But why a storage chamber below
Heathrow airport? Anything more substantial on this matter?

I'd like to know more about an expanded release of this soundtrack! I have 2 copies of the vinyl LP and the Italian RCA CD release.
