I disagree - the last few VF Club postings have been reasonably "meh" for me... (with the
exception of 'Vamp'). I've been waiting expectantly for 'Silver Bullet' for a while now (while I'll
grant you it's not a fantastic score - I'll guarantee it's a guilty pleasure for a lot of collectors)...
and I do remember being very disappointed when no soundtrack for 'Short Circuit' surfaced
when the film was originally released..... 2 for me this go-round.

Hello,
I ordered two of the four, "Silver Bullet" and "The President's Lady". As far as the other two go, I like Elmer Bernstein alot, But I don't need another 70's cop style movie score and I could'nt care less about the "Short Circiut" score. That's my humble two cents on this batch of club scores, I'm sure many of you will differ.
Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

I agree with adam. The new releases are boring....There are so many truly great filmscores that are still unreleased and Varese isn't doing anything to bring them to light. I think I don't have to mention which, there are too many.

I agree with Adam and Philipp. Perhaps Varèse has grown too big and isn't able to tell quality
from crap anymore. Or do their license deals oblige them to release any shelf warmer?

Yeah not a great line up. Interestingly Doug at Intrada said this about 2010-:
"Thanks to some licensing breakthroughs, some of the stuff we have coming up in 2010 will be - in a word - spectacular things you never thought you'd get to own".
Speculate away.

I'm feeling lukewarm about Circuit, Commissioner and Silver, indifferent about President. In addition, I find Varèse's releases featuring an often unattractive design. Their track lists are laid out very bad, putting 4-5 tracks in one line, thus making it a challenge to read the track list. Given Varèse's limited editions are also the most expensive (after shipping, taxes and the like) of all the soundtrack labels, I'll likely pass again (like last time around).
The VCL gives simply less value for money than Intrada, FSM and the others do. It's probably what has made and still makes VS survive in the long run.
Urs
P.S.: And I also find myself being deterred by the limited edition frenzy more and more. I have reached a point where it's a turn-off for me, especially in Varèse's case.

Just "Silver Bullet" for me. I am not impressed with the Varese clubs of late. I have emailed them several times in the last couple of years and asked for "Children of the Corn" and "Black Cauldron" with obviously no luck. If you guys are warm to these scores email these requests and maybe we will get something good next year!

Only ordered Silver Bullet from this new batch...and The Matrix.
The other titles don't do it for me. I like Bernstein a lot, but I agree with David, this one isn't very interesting. But I don't mind, saves me a lot money :) and I already ordered a few other great releases, like Starcrash, The Wrong Box and the Indy-trilogy.
erikvantholt, November 17, 2008; 4:04 PM

No orders here, same comment, I love Bernstein but this isn't really his style. So money saved.
I've also had it with these hyped limited releases, guessing games, announcement dates,
sometimes really bad soundquality. I guess I shouldn't be complaining, a lot of great releases
were done this way, and I'm very, very grateful for them (although I missed some too that are
beyond my financial reach now). But why not just release them? A typical soundtrack CD sells
no more than 3000 copies anyway and if it's a big sellout just release a couple more. If licensing
doesn't allow it, negotiate another one, if it sells that well everyone can make some money out
of it. But what do I know about this confusing business.

Now, this is Christmas .....
After a long long time, Varese releases 2 very interesting Score's
The beautiful score to the top Werwolf Movie "Silver Bullet" by Jay Chattaway and the David
Shire Score To one of my top Sifi Movies " Short Circuit"
The only thing i can say now,
ttttttttthhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkkkkkkk
you Varese !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)
marcel.korrodi, November 18, 2008; 7:57 AM

I didn't think the scores were that bad and obviously bought the Silver Bullet title and the Newman score. I really enjoyed Short Circuit as a juvenile and the "funky" Bernstein cues on the Varese sold it to me. To be honest, I dont have very many "funky" scores and so I bought the lot. It was a bitter sweet feeling but, as you guys have already expressed, this has been the feeling for some time with Varese. Sigh!
TheSaint.786, November 19, 2008; 5:58 AM

Short Circuit is a good one, but that's it. To be honest I'm really tired of Varese Sarabande. I don't know why people rate them so highly. I mean, I know they were the first soundtrack specialist label back in 79 but their time has passed. Intrada beats the shit out of Varese with their releases, even Film Score monthly and Lalaland. To top it all Robert Townson isn't even interested in reply, or getting someone else to reply on his behalf, to polite questions. They belong in the past not the future.
