Listening to yesterday's bargain bin raid purchases (6 CD for 9€):
NOAH'S ARK (Paul Grabowsky)
BLUE CITY (Ry Cooder)
JOHNNY HANDSOME (Ry Cooder)
MEET THE PARENTS (Randy Newman)
MALICE (Jerry Goldsmith)
BOWFINGER (David Newman)
All rather minor scores, but NOAH'S ARK and MALICE satisfy best so far.
Oh, and David, the Marco Polo main theme is really glorious and overwhelming! And I am looking forward to when DAY OF THE DOLPHIN arrives here. I have read so much good about it, including the case-breaking thick booklet ;-)
Best wishes,
Urs

Gormenghast (1999) - Richard Rodney Bennett/John Taverner - I'm experiencing a Bennett
revival and stumbled upon an affordable copy of this score on Amazon. I didn't buy it when it
came out because I had seen the TV-program of Gormenghast and for some reason hated it.
Also I was afraid this music would be too much in the modern classic fashion with Taverner
doing his bit. However this score is a keeper, very good like almost all Bennett's music. The
Taverner songs are great too, but the majority is Bennett at his best. Why does this man
perform cabaret music in bars instead of writing these great scores???? I'm still waiting for a
proper release on CD of Nicholas & Alexandra, Yanks and Return of the Soldier. I also bought
'Swann, A Murder Mystery' (1996) recently, a release I somehow wasn't aware of before and
totally missed when that came out. Also good music in typical Bennett chamber style.

I've been listening to DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (John Barry). Marvellous.
Just watched the Special Edition of CAPRICORN ONE on DVD. A powerful score, especially when it changes gears for the final scene. Unforgettable.... dear Jerry Goldsmith. you are missed.
I'd also like to praise Mr. Rubinstein's fine score to BLUE THUNDER. I usuallly had a film score LP on when reading comic books a couple of decades ago. BLUE THUNDER was a great accompaniment to many of them, not surprisingly, any issue of IRON MAN. He would have been a great choice to score that film.
How is it that so many good composers are underappreciated by Hollywood? Take Patrick Doyle, and Alan Silvestri. Those two gents wrote overwhelmingly good big-league debuts ( HENRY V, BACK TO THE FUTURE) and continue to do fine music. How come their names aren't on more of these super-hero pics for example? The movie business is nuts.
Best regards,
James - Toronto

1. The Devil Rides Out (collection of Hammer film music) - good fun melodrama and horror
2. Rio Lobo (Goldsmith) - great early Goldsmith score
3. 3:10 to Yuma (Beltrami) - great western music in the Morricone vein
4. They Live (Carpenter/Howarth) - can't go past John carpenter and Alan Howarth's synths
5. The Cassandra Crossing (Goldsmith) - a real gem. don't remember seeing the film but the
score is terrific
