Question

What film scores are you listening to right now? Comments?

Hello,

Listening to now?

In my cd changer right now:

1. "Grand Prix" - Maurice Jarre - (1966) - Not a score you would expect from a racing movie, Great stuff. *****

2. "Millennium" (disc 1) - Mark Snow - (1996) - Good, Fits the series very well. ***

3. "Cast a Giant Shadow" - Elmer Bernstein - (1966) - One of my favorite Elmer Bernstein scores from the 60's. *****

4. "Tristano E Isotta" - Marco Frisina - (1998) - My favorite Marco Frisina film score of the handful I own. *****

5. "Brannigan" - Dominic Frontiere - (1975) - Great 70's police drama/action film score with plenty of jazzy, funky, Brass. ****1/2

6. "The Fortune Cookie" - Andre Previn - (1966) - One of my favorites scores from the FSM box set release. 1966 sure was a great year for film music. *****

Your turn now

Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

Lots of titles still in rotation since around christmas - so much just came at once then. Most interesting picks:

GABRIEL YARED FILM MUSIC Vol. 3, 4, 6 **** From the tragically defunct Cinefonia label, these titles appeal the most to me from everything I heard from Yared so far.
LE TRAIN (and other scores) ***** True Philippe Sarde magic! But "La Veuve Couderc" (also on this CD) sounds like a direct lift from "Les Choses de la Vie".
BODY DOUBLE (Maurice Jarre) *** A wonderful main theme, but apart from that very little to enjoy.
JULES ET JIM / LES DEUX ANGLAISES (Georges Delerue) *** A very nice listen, was soothing and smooth during my fever two weeks ago.
TORCHWOOD (Ben Foster/Murray Gold) ***** Certainly my FAVOURITE among my recent purchases. I will certainly dig deeper into the Doctor Who soundtrack universe sooner rather than later. :-)

Right now:

- The prize (Goldsmith). Great release from FSM. Surely not one of my favs, but from time to time i give it a listening ***1/2
- Explorers (Goldsmith). Overrated score. Would say rather boring ***
- Psycho (Herrmann complete, conducted by Herrmann himself).
One of thoses scores that brought me to film music. Great *****
- Lonesome dove (Poledouris). An outstanding score by one of the masters of this genre ****
- The bride wore black. Nice to have this classic on CD (although the quality is not that good) ****

Defiance - James Newton Howard. Good stuff, not groundbraking like Schindler's List though,
***
Toy Soldiers - Robert Folk - Every time i hear this one it gets better! *****
Warriors Of Virtue - Don Davis. Nothing special. **
Durango - Mark McKenzie - One of the big surprises for me. ****
Lair - John Debney. Good, not the best i hoped. ***1/2
Suites and themes - Robert Folk. Amazing set! *****

Incidentally I was playing The Fortune Cookie just yesterday -- it's also one of my favorites from the box set.

I'm now (again) listening to Previn Conducts Korngold album which I got recently and it's truly great. It's a treat to hear the glorious Korngold scores so well performed and so well recorded. Highly recommended.

Antiteater's Greatest Hits - Peer Raben - (1972) - Brilliant collection of early works by Raben for Fassbinder. It's the last CD I needed to complete my Peer Raben collection and it totally pays. *****
