John Barry's THE BLACK HOLE (1979)

Hi there! I know I'm not the only person at Soundtrackcollector to have asked this question, but is an official expanded score album CD to John Barry's terrific THE BLACK HOLE (1979) ever going to see the light of day? I have a particular interest in this as THE BLACK HOLE is probably my favourite film, and subsequently one of John Barry's best scores. It would be a timely thing indeed if WALT DISNEY saw fit to release a special commemorative CD of the full score, given that THE BLACK HOLE is now 30 years old. Hey, after all , they did release a special extended score CD for TRON (1982). Maybe INTRADA should get together with DISNEY and issue a full score CD release (they collaborated very successfully on releasing the score to JERRY GOLDSMITH's BABY: SECRET OF THE LOST LEGEND. I do own a promo CD of the full BLACK HOLE score, which I got off eBay last year, but the unreleased cues come with sound effects from the movie. It's not bad, but what I wouldn't give to have an official CD release of the full score. I would appreciate any thoughts you have. Best wishes, Dan.

I'd surely appreciate such a release. Although the movie makes me shudder, the music is
definitely among Mr. Barry's best scores and I'm very glad that I have the fake "Mask"
bootleg at least - which sports an excellent sound quality.

If there ever was an official release - expanded or not - I would be one of the first people to
acquire it.

Unfortunately (?), the only official release to date, is the download on iTunes and I seriously
doubt, that Disney is willing to release it on CD or to license it to another label. It would be
great, if someone would proof me wrong...

Yes a very anticipated score indeed.

Danny, how much extra material is there compared to the '79 release?

Thanks

Anything is possible, but I agree with Coma that it is unlikely The House of Mouse would let another label release one of its own soundtracks. Disney, like Paramount, tends to be a bit reculsive in the soundtrack arena. Still, we can only hope and wait...

As for the score itself, I loved it! I remember watching this movie on television when I was a kid. I don't think anyone has every captured the swirling feel of intense vertigo as well as John Barry did in the opening credits--what a genius.

Of course, the score was too good for the movie, but that is not so much an anomaly in the world of motion pictures; however, the film, in my opinion, was not as bad as people say. I think they were trying too hard in making a Mickey Mouse version of "2001 Space Odyssey." The film's tones were somewhat unbalanced-- it's grim one minute and cute the next. But kudos to the writers for trying to make an allusion to Dante's "Inferno" in the film's finale. And references to Nietzsche's philosophies in Dr. Rhineheart's dialogue prove that there was an attempt of making an adult film.

In the end, it could have been better with another studio--but, as it now stands, campy fun with a great, unreleased soundtrack.

Best,
Jeremy

The Black Hole complete and The Goonies complete are probably both now on the top of my wish list - Oh, and complete scores for Star Trek 2 & 3!

I estimate there's about 20 minutes ommited from the soundtrack album. While the ommitted cues largly repeat elements of other cues found on the album, I'd love to see this score get the release it deserves.

I remember buying the album when it first came out - only 99p in the UK at a time when a standard LP was about £4.99. That's probably the best value release from Disney - ever!!!

THE BLACK HOLE is rotting in a hole.

As reported on our favorite forum, almost exactly two years ago, an official release has already occurred.

http://soundtrackcollector.com/forum/displayquestion.php?topicid=8845

They go over it in on the Intrada forums, explaining the technological issues with a CD release.

Here's an interview with Frank Thornton (producer of the Disney iTunes albums), explaining (in the last question) the legal issues:

That's one of a series of interviews with him.

If you live outside North America and you're tempted to actually go for this malarkey "release", you'd better have an American or Canadian credit card. iTunes is sogged-down with regional controls.

The Black Hole is rotting in The Mouse Hole. Stupid Disney.
