Info on "The Hills Have Eyes" Don Peake score
I contacted Hitchcock Media and recieved a reply. The CD of Don Peake's original score for the 1977 Wes Craven film "The Hills Have Eyes" is expected to be ready for shipment by the end of this month.
This is great news to me as I've been nuts on this film since watching it several times at the drive-in way back when. It was always a treat to fire up a pin joint of marijuana in the privacy of your own vehicle and enjoy the films on a huge 40 foot screen out in the sticks and usually away from the glare of city lights.
About 20 years ago I purchased the original one sheet film poster for "The Hills Have Eyes". Framed and hanging on the wall, the menancing eyes of Michael Berryman seems to be staring straight at you from any angle you look at it. He reminds me of a shithead I knew as a kid named Joe Bologone.

I remember the score as being quite experimental and "avant garde" A long cry from the composers work with "Sonny And Cher". I think it might be his best work. The disc will be about 40 minutes in length. I look forward to this.
Ron Hitchcock at Hitchcock media said they expect to produce some other Don Peake CD's as well as another "Knightrider" compilation.
It's about time this composer is recognized and his film scores available for listening.

How would you characterize "experimental" and "avant garde" ?
I am interested in buying this CD but do not want to be stuck with 40 minutes of cacophonic sound design.

The B movie composers seem to have had more freedom to create than many of the composers who worked with the big budget films. I remember the score as being atmospheric without melody. Appropiate for a bizarre horror film set in the hot dry desert.
Here's a poor quality updoad of the film someone posted on YouTube. You can sample the main title...

I have to laugh when I read about Michael Berryman. He is so scary looking and that is what gets him the parts. But as a person he is very friendly and fun to be around. I met him at a horror convention several years ago.
I will be picking up the CD as well, thanks for letting us know!

"tharpdevenport" brought it to my attention a couple of days ago in a previous thread. I had no idea the scores of Don Peake were being released.

No one is more excited about the release of the "Hills Have Eyes" score than me. I discovered the original tapes in my storage this year (2009). Because the tapes are so old, Ron Hitchcock had to "bake" them in an oven for 10 hours. Then we transferred the music to ProTools and made the Master.
I was studying composition with Academy Award winner Paul Glass at the time, and when I saw the film I saw an opportunity to use some atonal ideas with the string orchestra.
I also used some electronics, and a long beam of aluminium with a single string stretched along it. I also had the propmaster bring me the Bone necklaces that were worn by the actors, and I had the percussionists play them in the score.
I am also re-releasing my score for Wes Craven's "The People Under The Stairs".
Thank You for your interest in my music.
Best Regards,
Don Peake

I've been wishing for "The Hills Have Eyes" score release since watching the film years ago and noticing the music. It's one of the better 70's horror films. I look forward to hearing this one as I'm sure many other are as well. I contacted the Varese Sarabande label way back in 1980 and suggested an LP of this music. I was truly surprised to hear that Hitchcock Media is finally making it available.
I hope Don Peake contributes liner notes for the disc.
