The last few cds:
Shogun by Jarre
The Kentuckian and Williamsburg by Herrmann
Killer Elite by Fielding
The Librarian 3 by Loduca

Hard to go wrong with any of the Tribute label cds. If you like El Cid you should try Charge of the Light Brigade. The Loduca score is fun. I wish Shogun was expanded. Killer Elite is kick butt.

Hello ragar01,

I also wish the "Shogun" Release was expanded. I do plan on ordering the "Kentuckian" and "Charge of the Light Brigade" as soon as I see if I want any of the Varese club release($$$$$). I own the first "Librarian" release and it's good, But I'm not sure if I want the newest release. I also am fond of the "Killer Elite" score. Thanks for your reply.

DIE SCHATZINSEL (Treasure Island) by Karim Sebastian Elias ****
GOLD by Elmer Bernstein *****
THE SATAN BUG by Jerry Goldsmith ***
7 FACES OF DR. LAO by Leigh Harline ***
CHARIOTS OF THE GODS by Peter Thomas *****
THREE NUTS FOR CINDERELLA by Karel Svoboda ***

GOLD excels both in wealth of melody as in crips and spatial sound. CHARIOTS OF THE GODS is growing more and more into a listening pleasure the longer I play it (and at just 5€ new, it's a pleasure in other respects, too ;-))

Until September - John Barry (Gorgeously romantic)

Yonkers Joe - Chris Hajian (Melodic and driving. You should keep an eye on this composer!)

Mulholland Falls - Dave Grusin (Not as exceptional as Chinatown, but very catchy)

a Johnny Mandel Trio (The Americanization of Emily/The Sandpiper/Drums of Africa). Great
compilation of complete scores by one of my favorite composers. Emily is a real gem,
Sandpiper is very good but a bit repetitive, especially since you get the complete score plus
the soundtrack album produced by Quincy Jones that sounds the same.

This Island Earth (and other alien invasion films) (also contains The Day of the Triffids, Earth
vs. Flying Saucers, War of the Satellites) - Stein, Salter, Mancini, Goodwin, Amfitheatrof,
Greene on Monstrous Movie Music, Radio Symphony Orchestra of Slovakia conducted by
Mitsumoto and Mayne. Another great CD from MMM. Nice campy film with a solid score by
Stein with some help from Salter and Mancini. But the real discovery on this one is 'Day of
the Triffids' by Ron Goodwin (who had very little time to complete this score, like the rest of
the Universal staff composers).

El Cid (complete film score, City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by Nic Raine on Tadlow 3
CD-set) - Miklos Rozsa. The ultimate recording, not a dull moment, it will loose your dental
fillings.

Spellbound (Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Allan Wilson on Intrada
Excalibur Collection) - Miklos Rozsa. The same orchestra as the Monstrous Movie recording
(mentioned above). These people play well!

Shokutaku No Nai Ie (The Empty Table) - Toru Takemitsu (Complete Takemitsu edition 4,
Music for Movies 2). One of my favorite Takemitsu scores.

Il Grande Silenzio - Ennio Morricone. I don't play much Morricone but this one never bores
me. Great atmospheric score as cold as snow.

Hello all,

Thanks for your replies. I like to ask this question from time to time because there are so many different scores most I don't have and some I have never heard of. Your comments give me some ideas of music I might want to check out. I also like to see the common ground with other collectors who's opinions I have respected over the years on this forum.

I love to see a couple of you like the "Gold" Score as much as I do.

Couvee - I also think the Tadlow label release of "El Cid" is outstanding. I read on their website that their upcoming releases for 2009 are going to be the complete scores of "Exodus" and "Lawrence of Arabia". Hope these releases turn out as good as the "El Cid" box set did.

Thanks again to all of you-

A complete Lawrence Of Arabia?? Excellent news, thats one to look forward to:-)

thomas.scallan, March 9, 2009; 6:13 PM

Hello thomas.scallan,

Keep in mind that the Tadlow label release will be a re-recording. If your a total purist you may not be as enthused as some of us who don't mind a re-recording once in awhile if it is done well. In the case of "Lawrence of Arabia" I don't think the complete original score is available. The original cd release that is conducted by Maurice jarre is very good, But the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. This is why I welcome the re-recording.

Thanks David

Yes, I had realised after my post that Tadlow's release will be a rerecording. However, a PPO recording of Lawrence was issued by Silva a number of years ago conducted by Tony Bremner, which I imagine a lot of us already have. So how 'complete' is that recording, compared to what they may well plan to release now?

Thomas

thomas.scallan, March 10, 2009; 1:09 PM

Hello Thomas,

I don't know for sure, But I would imagine the Tadlow release for "Lawrence of Arabia" will get the same careful pains taking treatment of the "El Cid" release. All the music from the film from start to finish Along with alternate tracks. It will probably be a multi disc box set (I Hope). Where as the Silva release is 51 + minutes long.

Best Regards,
