Goldsmith's LONELY ARE THE BRAVE finally on CD!

Yeah, it's true, Jerry Goldsmith's masterful score to modern western LONELY ARE THE BRAVE has been finally released on CD by Varèse Sarabande. Great news indeed, but not the only ones.

In addition to this gem, we can also enjoy another important soundtrack in its original form at last. Bill Conti's THE RIGHT STUFF, the oiginal recording, finally on CD. And what a beautiful cover art!

The other two titles from this new Varèse Club batch may be less popular, but are equally interesting: HARD CONTRACT, by Alex North (from the 60's, which was a really good time for the Maestro), and NORMA RAE, by David Shire (and his only Oscar to date, for the title song).

All in all, a wonderful batch of new releases. What are your opinions and preferences on them?

Regards,
Angel

P.S.: By the way, if Varèse has finally got to release LONELY ARE THE BRAVE, this could be of great importance for the film music world, since Universal has lots of great soundtracks in its archives. Let's hope for future amazing releases...

For me 'The Right Stuff' was an essential buy. I loved the film when it was released and quite
liked the concert suite that was coupled with 'North&South' on the old Varese CD. This is a
very nice addition to that. I loved the samples and the cover art is great indeed. Lovely
release.

For the rest, it was a bit more difficult to decide. I'm not a completist who will buy anything
just because it's by a certain composer, so I listened to the samples over and over to decide
objectively what I liked. The Goldsmith didn't sound really that special to me, at times it
almost sounds like Elmer Bernstein (not that that is a problem), but there are also the typical
Goldsmith trademarks. The sound was a bit muffled (is it in mono?). I doubt this is 'arguably
his best western score', but I didn't hear all the tracks. I think I can live without this release.

Norma Rae was a good film, but the music is also not that interesting to me. I don't have
anything by Alex North and what I had I didn't really got attached to (Spartacus, Cleopatra,
2001) but that's just my personal response to the music, some people would regard these
among the best scores ever written. However, Chinatown is one of my favorite Goldsmith
scores and 'Hard Contract' sounds like a sister companion to that one. It's hard to tell which
of the themes I like best, they are different yet are in a very similar mood. So just by
listening to the samples this was the second CD I chose. By the quality of the score and since
it's just a 1000 release (and the name of North) this is bound to sell out fast.

O joy unconfined! Not only this one but at long last IN HARMS WAY finally on CD at last (At least at price I can afford). This is definately one for my collection.

As far as I'm concerned Goldsmiths works in the 60's and early 70's are (with some notable exceptions) his best.

I also love anything written by Alex North, so HARD CONTRACT will also go in the bag

I ordered a copy of "Lonely Are The Brave". What a great film and score it is. It's one of those, been wanting to hear for years, deals with me.

I just ordered a copy of THE RIGHT STUFF at Chris Soundtrack Corner. This really fine score finally got a release. We only had to wait and be patient. Its one of the gems of the 80s and for me personally one of the finest scores composed by Bill Conti. I addition this movie is one of my all-time favourites. I love both the movie as also the book by Tom Wolfe. I hope Varèse Sarabande will release more gems like this in the future.
