Question

Bummers because of reviews!!!

It happens to me a lot lately: i read a review of a score that must be incredible according to
the reviewer. I buy it, and it's a piece of total crap. I even have a top 5:
5. The Dark Knight: Lots of great reviews but i couldn't find any music to enjoy
4. Lifeforce: A 'hidden gem' etc. Well, i hid it, because it's awfull!
3. Explorers: 'Action', 'rousing music'...Where people, where?
2. Mutant Chronichles: 'A new talent', 'great orchestral actionmusic.' What a letdown!
1. The Dark Chrystal: Praised into heaven, but THE biggest piece of ugliness i ever heard

Do you guys have these experiences a lot too?

You don't think much of LIFEFORCE? Really? Everyone's got their own opinions obviously, but I'd be curious to hear a couple you do like if this is on your naff list. No offence meant just genuinely curious.

What i do like???? That is too much to mention here, but my top 5 of this last year:
5. King Kong lives: Wow; this is a surprise!
4. Quantum of Solace: David Arnold knows how to do it!
3. Un homme et son Chien: Beautiful!!!
2. Suites&Themes Robert Folk: a rare case of perfectionism
1. Columbus, the discovery: short, but what elegance!

Well, I love Dark Knight, but not too fussed by Dark Crystal...

I do occasionally buy things based SOLELY on reviews here and on filmtracks.
Was pretty impressed by Krull (James Horner) even if it is just like Star Trek II/III. Never seen the film though.
Same again for John Debney's Cutthroat island; great!
If it's a potentially expensive purchase, or perhaps a limited release that you kinda have to buy on release day, I do try and get a feel for the score through youtube or something, and make a descision that way.

Yeah, i try youtube, or else it's a guess wich is based on my knowledge of composer. 'Krull' is a
lousy film, but a great score if you buy the SC release and not the 2cd version, wich breaks the
listen.
Last week i bought the re-recording of 'Jason and the Argonauts' because of a good review on
filmtracks. I couldn't even find the patience to listen it out...not my cup of tea.

Generally, I don't care about other people's rave reviews. Especially on Amazon, it's mostly
bullshit. I rather prefer to mak my own mistakes - like the last release by Alexandre Desplat,
L'Armée du Crime, which is so dull, even my feet fell asleep.

Dark Crystal - ugly?!?!?

I myself NEVER buy something based on a review, because tastes vary and a reviewer can be anyone, with or without actual knowledge on the subject.
Also, there are still SO many scores I want to have or listen to, that I don't feel the need to take a gamble on something I know only very little about.

I do however appreciate sites that put up samples to listen to - that can sometimes make a decision easier.
Instead of YouTube, if possible, you can rent the film before buying the soundtrack (Dark Knight comes to mind here).
That's usually the way I discover a score I would like to own, by watching a film.

Still, I can fully understand someone's need to keep up with everything that is being released, hoping to indeed find a true gem along the way.

There are few things more rousing than "Have a Nice Trip" from Explorers.
