STAR TREK...

I had waited thirteen weeks for this score to arrive, for some reason it had not arrived earlier and as someone once said to me 'good things come to those who wait'. Never have I awaited in anticipation for the arrival of any score that I purchased thus far than Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan, newly expanded. This, for me, is without the question the greatest of the Star Trek scores and will probaly not be matched until Horner himself scores the next film and even then there are doubts he would accomplish that feat.

From the very opening of Courage's theme of the series through to Amazing Grace and beyond this is brilliant listening. I am now on the third consecutive play of the CD and I have not done that ever. Not even with the original releases of LOTR or Raiders of the Lost Ark have I done this.

One could question the brilliance of the film as opposed to any of others since, hence the music being enhanced as a consequence. The new Star Trek I have likened to Wrath of Khan but Giacchino's score is no match on Horner's.

I hope I have started a thread here that has some opinion as it has been a while since we have had a meaningful discussion on this thread as I all I seem to be seeing is, 'name of song in this film, anyone?'

I'm not sure I can be bothered (perhaps that translates as I don't want to spend the money) on getting this expanded release. I have the original on the GNP/Crescendo label and, whilst I acknowledge that FSM produce the best sounding releases, I have no problem with the quality or sound of the earlier release.

So it comes down to whether I want the extra music. I have all of the first ten Star Trek scores (I haven't bothered with the latest film's score) which I collected a few years ago (adding the last two or three when they were released). I'm not a S.T. fan - I only really enjoyed the interplay between Kirk, Spock and Bones, the sci-fi/fantasy leaving me cold and switched off.

But I have liked the music, mainly and I am a collector at heart.

I fell in love with Jerry Goldsmith's original album for S.T. - TMP and have rated it one of my favourite ten scores of his for many, many years. And then I bought the expanded 20th Anniversary release and ... found I hardly ever play it! Yes, I still like it but I'm tempted to say I prefer the shorter programmed release rather than the expanded one (I suppose I should program it to play just the original tracks in the original CD order but I'm worried I'll never play the full release again).

And so, whilst I like S.T. - TWOK a lot (I actually prefer James Horner's score from the 90s to those from the 80s with, perhaps, the exception of Cocoon) I don't want the same result. So I think I'll stick to the CD I know and love.

NB: some expanded releases work for me; this is not a problem I have with all such releases.

Film Score Monthly's new release of ST II:TWOK, is well worth the upgrade, IMHO.

Mitch, believe me that this one is well worth the upgrade (though you need to keep the original as there are a few seconds of overlay on "Battle In The Mutara Nebula" that never made it onto the original soundtrack release. The overlays were in the actual film but not on the Atlantic or GNP releases.

The FSM TREK II score is a textbook example of how an expanded release can really illuminate the brilliance of a richly textured film score, and in the case of STAR TREK II, Horner's bravura opus cannot be fully appreciated without hearing how all of it works as a cohesive whole.

IMHO, do yourself the favour and upgrade to this one.
