MICHAEL SMALL - MARATHON MAN / THE PARALLAX VIEW, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, INDEPENDENCE DAY

Hi there! My internet connection was down for 24 hours yesterday. It is now back up and running again and today I almost had a heart attack because I've just seen that 3 new scores are released: INDEPENDENCE DAY (complete) DAVID ARNOLD, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972) - John Williams and MARATHON MAN/THE PARALLAX VIEW by Michael Small. WOW! Does this mean that Paramount is finally opening it's soundtrack archives? Marathon Man is a great movie, one of my favourites, but I never really rated the score that much - it's good, but that's maybe because the sound mix for the score in the movie wasn't that loud. That said, I have just listened to snipets of the Marathon Man score on the FSM website, and I think it's great! Way better than it sounds in the movie. Michael Small's music reminds me of three other great composers. 1. John Williams - his BLACK SUNDAY score is, in parts, incredibly similar to MARATHON MAN. 2. Jerry Fielding - his score for STRAW DOGS is also very dark and brooding. 3. Howard Shore - his scores for SEVEN, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and DEAD RINGERS contains some very dark, psychological music indeed. Does anybody else have an opinion about this? Thanks and best wishes, Danny.

I try tot stay away from dark and psychological music; i'm more into optimistic stuff. I dont' get why people want to listen to scores like that from movies about serialkillers etc.

Dirk,

Well its just another facet of enjoying film music. Big swelling
themes can be a joy as well as small brooding music in where you
start hearing themes after multiple listens.

Actually it is a known fact that in film, the horror genre is the most
popular of them all (well not counting adult movies then :-) ).
So huge potential in film music as well.

Would you consider Jaws to be a movie about a serial killer?

Big hooray for all good film music.

In answer to your question, yes, the doors to the Paramount vault have been pried open begining with last years release of Bernstein's AIRPLANE! and LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER, Goldsmith's SECONDS and PLAYERS and the few others you mentioned above. Rejoice!
