Unreleased British Scores
I recently had the pleasure of watching the Richard Attenborough Classic "Brighton Rock" and was stunned yet again by the fine score by Hans May. This got me to wondering why so many brilliant scores from British movies of the 40's & 50's have never seen light of day. "The master of Ballantrae" & "I see a dark stranger" by William Alwyn are 2 for example. I know a lot of these were produced by now defunct studios but you would have to wonder where all the music tapes ended up. Thanks to FSM Varese etc we have a wealth of Hollywood scores to enjoy. I can only wish that someday some enterprising person will happen upon these recordings and put them out there. "Brighton Rock" itself could be a good re-recording project for Morgan & Stromberg

You are right, Gerry. Lots of great British scores that seem to be totally forgotten (perhaps lost forever).
But sometimes miracles happen. For example, look what happened with the wonderful scores from the Hammer Films. When every hope was lost, GDI Records began to release some of the best works by James Bernard, David Whitaker, Harry Robertson, etc. And look what Trunk Records did with the haunting score from BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW, by Marc Wilkinson...
Regarding Wilkinson, I'm thinking now on another superb British score by this composer which should be released: THE DARWIN ADVENTURE, directed by Jack Couffer in 1971...
Yes, there are lots of wonderful scores from British movies waiting to be released some day.

Although not from the same period, I would love a release of John Cameron's score to the 1988 TV miniseries "Jack the Ripper". But again, unlikely...

The scores for the UK Disney films like 'Candelshoe', 'Condorman' and The Watcher In The Woods are all worthy of a limited edition cd release. Let's hope it happens one day.
