music that "seems" to appear naturally in the film-bands playing in a bar/music on a radio/- MUSIC that is coming from a SOURCE in the movie itself as opposed to an offscreen addition to heighten the scene
specific examples:the "ice cream truck" jingle in ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13---the "native dance" on Skull Island in KING KONG

Best source music cue ever:
In a Simpsons Halloween Special, Homer is running from something - I think it was an alien - and suddenly one begin to hear Herrmann's Psycho being played. What seems to be underscore, a nice touch to show his panic, turns to be source music because in the street that Homer was going to cross passes by him a Bus with a Philarmonic rehearsing... Herrmann's Psycho!

The best example of "Source music":
Deadfall (1968): John Barry conducts his Romance For Guitar and Orchestra as a live concert attended by the owners of a mansion being robbed by chartacters played by Michael Caine and Eric Portman - the music acts also as the soundtrack - superbly dramatic.
