What about this great jerry compilation?
Hi to everybody!
What about this release?
i am sure that you were waiting for something different!Sure, it is a very incredible release and i don't want to criticize it but personally i don't like compilations and i expected some more exciting single releases as commando, predator, island etc.....
I think every serious goldsmith collector has got a good 70% of this collection, isn't it?
I AM INTERESTED IN YOUR OPINION!!

I'm happy that you agree with me!.....and now that other Alien music has been released, how much time we will wait for a deluxe edition of this masterwork?i think that Varese has not respected collectors and especially FSM Goldsmith releases!!!!
....Anyway this is an opinion of mine!!
see you soon

Hi you all,
Sorry guys, I don't agree. I am eagerly awaiting this release.
How enjoyable it will turn out to be depends on the listening
experience itself. I have to admit that I do like compilations.
Usually I make them myself. One of the reasons may be is that
I don't own half of the mentioned titles, and I don't mind having
the other half twice. I hope the rest of this Goldsmith Year will bring
something that will please you as well. Maybe we can start a
"Most Wanted Goldsmith-Poll" We will talk, and maybe Varese will listen...?
My most wanted Goldsmith-title is Baby, Secret of the Lost Legend.
Finally my congratulations to everybody with Mr. Goldsmith's Birthday,

I am not really disappointed but both Jerry Goldsmith and us his fans deserve more complete works, titles like F.S.M and Promethus Records present. It's true that I have all the previously released scores on this one but I'll buy it for the ones did did not even make it as bootlegs. It's the curse of us collectors.
baalgehenna, February 10, 2004; 7:59 PM

I'm still waiting for an official and complete Gremlins soundtrack. Of course I know this is not Goldsmith's ultimate masterpiece. But a lot of soundtrack maniacs of my age first discovered Goldsmith's music with this record. I'm a nostalgic geek!
vodka_kayou, February 10, 2004; 8:23 PM

Hi Vodka, seems like the Geffen/Warner affair it is a bit hard to overcome, so the whole complete Gremlins thing won't be that easy. I, too, would like to have that.
Regarding the new CD, I'm a bit sad, because Varese could have given us heaven if had chosen to release some of those scores in the last CD's in longer versions, instead of going for those which have been already released.
But, one doesn't know when will get a chance to get some of that scores - extended or not - so I won't sit around waiting to see the 1.500 going away...
antonio_lerias, February 10, 2004; 9:07 PM

Several people have asked the question of who the 6-CD compilation is aimed at. I would imagine that a lot of Goldsmith fans would have a lot of these scores already (one way or another) and to have bits out of them again doesn't seem to me to be value for money to them.
I believe that some of the scores featured in this new compilation are relatively short in their complete forms - so, for example, VON RYAN'S EXPRESS is more or less complete as featured.
But I can't help but wonder if there are going to be deluxe or CD Club versions released sometime in the future of some of the scores featured in the compilation - especially when they hint that this year is going to be a big year for them with regard to Goldsmith releases. If they can put out deluxe versions of THE OMEN series and include selected tracks in the compilation then they can do it the other way too.
It would have been better to have issued some expanded/first-time-on-CD scores and to have made that "extra special effort" to get some really sought after releases.
I suppose that we should applaud Varese for doing such a release but ultimately I am disappointed with this release. And this disappointment is, to a large extent, brought about by Varese's own hyping of the "landmark" release.
alan, February 11, 2004; 1:20 AM

Iwas expecting a landmark ORIGINAL SCORE heretofore unavailable. (I offer a 2 disc set of Spartacus or Mutiny on the Bounty). I don't think Varese has done anything bad in the Goldsmith tribute, they just had my anticipation at a higher level than was necessary. Maybe next time.

big big big disappointment
Varese has missed the point here. Absolutely.
What's this ? A Compilation celebrating Goldsmith carrer ?
WRONG. It's just a "GOLDSMITH AT FOX" compilation, with half the titles already available and the other half deserved for better treatment (I am sure ALIEN and THE VANISHING will see the light as complete relases late this year).
It also has the smell of those FSM releases from the sixties-seventies that only the very fans are waiting for (SPYS ?? DETECTIVE ?? DAMNATION ALLEY ??).
And what about the price ? For a 6 CD compilation where just 3 of them contain UNRELEASED STUFF, why to high the price at 130 $ ??? It's way too much, folks. Or do you still wanna make more money with the OMENs and PATTON re-releases/re-recordings ?
My money is safe.

Ah well, I feel that Varese Sarabande's first releases on vinyl are the best. I'm not much into a lot of the stuff they produce on Compact Disc.
Seems to me it was more a labor of love on the part of the three guys who produced the first vinyl recordings on that label back around 1978. Something new and completely original, nothing else like it!
They did a lot for film music, especially during the time when big mainstream labels like United Artists were churning out releases and re-issues with such poor sound quality.
I could go on about this for an hour. The first recording on Varese I purchased was "Martin". I started searching around for others yet couldn't find any.
I was in L.A. shortly thereafter so got their number out of the phone book and called to ask if I could purchase some recordings directly through them.
So anyway, my brother and I went up to where they were located at the time, it was a warm spring day and the door was open in this tiny little place and at that time Chris Kuchler was working on the cover design for the "Mad Max" soundtrack. I saw it laid out on a big work easel with the lettering in place. He showed me a list of upcoming releases and I threw down something like $120.00 for a copy of each to be sent one at a time as they were being produced.
I like to think I'm one of the very first to buy "Pirannha", "Maniac", "Dawn Of The Dead" and what ever else I paid for at that time.

Hi VAMF!
Your story is a great story!Sincerely!Anyway i agree with you!
I have Piranha on vinyl too,and every time i know that Varese club is going out i always hope to see a deluxe edition of it as for THE ISLAND!There are hundreds of titles that could receive a similar treatment, don't you think?
I hope in the future.......but no complilations anymore please!!!You can't enter in the introspective work of a composer with compilations! They are ok for regular releases but NO on cd club!!!
see you soon

Valid comments from everyone posting, however... The fact that Varese is
producing only 1500 of these sets makes them the kind of thing that -- if you
pass on it -- you will definitely kick yourself over when they show up on eBay and
forums like this for $500 a pop. Same thing happened with the Club release of
the Goldsmith Tribute in 1980-whatever.
glenngarv, February 12, 2004; 7:34 AM

Also, I agree the idea of a compilation CD is silly. In these days of iTunes and
iPods, anyone can make their own custom compilation, so why should a record
label attempt to compete with that anymore? Especially since, odds are, the
buyer already has the components on earlier releases. With the new Goldsmith
disc, a 3-CD release of just the premiere stuff would have been very acceptable.
After all, who really needs another version of "Omen" cuts in their collection?
