Looking for a PBS Documentary: Simon Fisher Turner
I've not had any luck trying to get a copy of a soundtrack that up until a few days ago has been on the PBS website. It was listed as on backorder, but they showed the CD and gave the track listings even (though I didn't copy them). But now the page on PBS' website is gone and they haven't answered my questions about the product. I can't find it anywhere online. I've used Google till I'm sick of it (it only turns up the DVD of the series), but I'd really love to get the soundtrack itself.
Even if you've never heard of this, but you have some advice about it, please let me know where might be a good place to look.
The score is for "The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization" and is by Michael Gibbs and Simon Turner-Fisher. It's from 1999. I guess it's possible some of the songs came from another score, but I don't recognize any of them as coming from something else I've heard. You can hear some of the score on these clips of the series (these are quicktime files of the show itself, not just of music):
(NOTE, take the "1" in pbs1 out to prevent hotlinking from the forum)
http://www.pbs1.org/empires/thegreeks/moovs/cleisthenes_300.mov
this is my favorite and the one that's been in my head for a couple of weeks
http://www.pbs1.org/empires/thegreeks/moovs/cleisthenes2_300.mov
http://www.pbs1.org/empires/thegreeks/moovs/building_300.mov
http://www.pbs1.org/empires/thegreeks/moovs/liam_neeson_300.mov
(now this last one is really an advertisement for the series, and you ought to recognize the music from it that comes from another well-known score)
---------------------------------------
So my question is, how would any of you go about finding something like this? Any places that would hunt it down if I would buy it from them?
Thanks for any help,
Dave

I'm not going to be much help I'm afraid.
I saw your post elsewhere and spent a bit of time looking in all the usual online places that I could think of but I couldn't see it anywhere.
I had noticed that there was no reference in the PBS online shop to it, even though there was a link from another part of the PBS site. Maybe the CD has been cancelled? Without feedback from PBS itself it may not be clear if the CD was actually issued.
If I see any mention of this CD anywhere I'll pop a message here.

Hi Dave--
Six years since your original post, but here goes...
I've been obsessed with this piece of music lately. Did you ever have
any luck locating it? If you're still out there I'd be happy to help in the
quest.
All the Best,
Kris

Hi "Canada"! Any chance you'd send me an email about it? I'd be happy to work any arrangement out with you. I still show this documentary to classes each year and lament that I have never been able to listen to the music each time.
dave
(You can figure the email out I'm sure, it is: (insertmynamehere).webb@att.net Thanks!

Did either of you manage to secure copies of this? I was unable
to purchase this on amazon due to unavailability. Would any of
you be willing to contact me personally about this item at email:
Masaketsu@hotmail.com
Please let me know, i'm interested in working something out to
find information on obtaining such priceless, and amazing music.
Thank you.

I can't find a copy anywhere on the internet. One of the best soundtracks in a documentary by far. :(

Has anyone managed to get a hold of the cd recently? It's such a
shame that its so hard/impossible to get a hold of, I find myself
sympathising exactly with previous comments on here from over the
years regarding the matter, as the soundtrack is brilliant. Is there
any chance that those with the cd could perhaps share the music in
some way?

In August of 2013 I contacted both Simon Fisher Turner and Michael Gibbs about posting the soundtrack to The Greeks on YouTube. However, they only have rights to the compositions and not the master recordings. There is also some confusion as to who currently holds the rights to the master recordings. Both Michael Gibbs and Simon Fisher Turner are unaware of the current copyright holder. As to releasing the score on to YouTube Simon Fisher Turner's publicist said:
"I cannot give you official approval to put the music on YouTube as I don't know who controls the master rights but I can tell you that if you do put it up there will be no repercussions for you, personally, if someone wants it taken down. If someone, including us, wants it taken down we will ask YouTube and that will be the extent of things."
I am not fully sure what Soundtrack Collector's stance on linking to unofficial music postings is and don't want to upload the music if it is against the site's policies, which I am pretty sure it is.
If I every get full permission from the copyright holders I will upload the score as fast as possible. If any of you know Soundtrack Collector's stance on the much more dubious, I would like to know.
I contacted Simon Fisher Turner's publicist here:

And I got in contact with Michael Gibbs through the following website:

I've uploaded music on youtube before, I just put the record label and give full credit to the composers and whatnot, and I also don't monetize it. Usually it isn't a problem (especially with more obscure music, as is the case with the Greeks soundtrack). If it is, all they do is take it down and that's the end of it (like the folks you contacted stated). I feel like if you were to state the composers and then PBS in the descriptions that would be okay.
As far as posting upload links or anything of the sort, I'd contact this website's manager(s) about that and see what they have to say on the matter.

Also I can be reached at sercalius@gmail.com
sercalius, March 14, 2014; 3:46 PM

A search has found that the owner with the rights (at least according to Amazon) is Arachne Music. I can't find any contact information for them though. Since the score is so obscure, and it's not being sold except through second-hand sources I doubt it would be taken down on youtube.

Hello. I've been looking for this soundtrack for years as well. All I can
offer is this page:
http://www.pbs.org/empires/thegreeks/makingof/shop_html.html
Which features the soundtrack as being available to buy but following
the link to the PBS Shop doesn't reveal it. Indeed it is not available on
the PBS shop at all.
What's frustrating about all this is that the soundtrack exists but it
seems impossible to get it. Did they make 10 copies of it or something?
Anyway, I hope one day someone puts it on YouTube or the like to
share the joy around a bit.

Amazon has a copy for sale, but it's 95 dollars. :(
sercalius, October 23, 2014; 11:54 PM

I've uploaded the soundtrack to youtube, figured I would post that here in case anyone was still looking for it. Just search "The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization soundtrack" and it should come up in the results.

Wow thanks so much!!! Hero:)
