Just now came across your question - hope I'm not too late.

A great place that I always check out is Amoeba Records in Hollywood. It's at Sunset and Vine - just West of the Cineramadome. They have a website:

www.amoebarecords.com

It's MASSIVE.

Enjoy the trip!

Aron's Records has been a fixture in the lives of many Los Angeles music junkies since they were born. Though the parking lot can be quite a headache on a busy Saturday afternoon, the browsing to be had at this store makes it all worth it. Shelves are stocked with vinyl, CDs and cassettes dedicated to the latest in indie rock, hip-hop, jazz re-issues and world music. The electronica section is to die for. The super-hipster posturing may be a little intimidating for the average U2 or Elton John fan, who may very well be ridiculed after making a purchase. But Aron's and its staff offer help and advice in a variety of obscure musical niches -- everything from samba-fused house to West African chanteuses or Tejano rock. There's a used section for struggling students and six listening stations featuring the latest releases. Gift certificates and musical accessories, such as blank tapes, record sleeves and turntable needles are also available, as well as Stadium Mustard -- the only mustard to have been in outer space.
