'Dances With Wolves'
Now that John Barrys' 'complete' soundtrack is now available and the long awaited film version of 'The Buffalo Hunt' included the liner notes show that this track was not recorded until 10 October 1990 and the orchestrator was Mark McKenzie (all other tracks being recorded between 19th and 25th Julyand orchestrated by Greg McRitchie). Could someone confirm that this was a last minute change prior to the films release and therefore too late to change the original album which (if I remember correctly) came out well in advance ot the film. So, who instituted the change and why because, although it is an exhillerating piece it seems a little at odds with the rest of the score and was the conductor of this track Mark McKenzie himself?

I refer you to the compilation double CD: Zulu released by Silva Screen in 1999 which included a recording of "The Buffalo Hunt" - movie version.
The sleeve notes refer to a disagreement between John Barry and director Kevin Costner who wanted "a more traditional western approach" for this sequence whilst accepting Barry's approach to score the rest of the movie.
The notes are silent on the matter of orchestrator / conductor of this re-scored sequence but the delay to which you refer appears logical.
