Question

What are some of your favorite Elmer Bernstein scores?

Without a doubt "To Kill a Mockingbird" tops my list (Please read my soundtrack review on this website). From "The Man With the Golden Arm", "God's Little Acre", "Hawaii", "Summer and Smoke", "Some Came Running", "Walk on the Wild Side", "The World of Henry Orient", "The Great Escape" and his Oscar-winning "Thoroughly Modern Millie", his genius was tremendous. First Jerry Goldsmith; then David Raksin; and now Elmer Bernstein (is this what they mean when they say "they come in threes"?) I will miss them all.

Here's a little known Oscar trivia that I calculated just recently: Elmer Bernstein is the only individual who was nominated for an Academy Award in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. A remarkable achievement!

It has been a bad (sad) Summer - there was also Piero Piccioni just after Jerry Goldsmith.

With regard to Mr. Bernstein's legacy of work, I will place The Magnificent Seven at the top of the list - surely the best western film score of all time? Even the great western works of Newman, Tiomkin, Goldsmith, et. al don't come close - the score is pure perfection.

I also rate his scores to Gold (where is the CD????), Walk on the Wild Side, Great Escape and several others very highly.

Undoubtedly THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, then TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE MAGNIFICIENT SEVEN and his beautiful scores featuring his tradmark ondes martenot. God bless you and rest in peace Meastro Elmer Bernstein. Respect.

I saw Elmer Berstein conduct the Henry Mancini Orchestra a few years ago. He came out wearing these red shoes and looked like he would live on forever.

One of the themes he did was WALK ON THE WILD SIDE (which I had never really listened to), and MAGNIFICENT SEVEN which (to me) were the highlights of the show.

I really liked the music to SWEET SMELL OF SUCESS and the TEN COMMANDMENTS. John Landis re-introduced us to him with his scores to AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and of course his "God Music" for ANIMAL HOUSE.

Favorite Bernstein scores.

"Birdman Of Alcatraz"

"To Kill A Mockingbird"

"Kings Go Forth"

"The Carpetbaggers"

A non-film music recording from late 1950's Decca records entitled "Blues And Brass" with a wild Saul Bass cover design.

"Sweet Smell Of Success"

"Gods Little Acre"

"The Grifters"

Ghostbusters, for sentimental reasons. I was a kid. And when I bought the soundtrack I was furious : only two (great) tracks of the orchestral score! Since then I keep waiting for an official release of Bernstein's Ghostbusters. Sure it's not his ultimate masterpiece, but I love it. I WANT IT! Come on, Varese, DO SOMETHING!

There are so many already mentioned but I would like to name one that is too often missed and that's Marie Ward. Still available from the Varese website if anyone is interested.
