The Thing [Expanded Motion Picture Soundtrack]
Anyone knows anything about Ennio Morricone's expanded soundtrack for John Carpenter's "The Thing"?
Any info, incl where to find it, will be appriciated.

Well, the original soundtrack is in itself an expanded edition. Carpenter did not put a lot of Morricone's great music in his movie. Il fact, Carpenter himself composed the tracks that are not on the official CD. That's all I know.

There is a *beep* around, with alternate versions etc. and even half of the opening scene, composed by JC (but not credited).
But this "release" is a CD-R, and really not all that great. If you stumble across it you might as well pick it up - but it's defînitely not worth hunting down.
I think that JC did all the "drones" that are so typical for him in the film (the video version was re-scored as opposed to the theatrical cut) but the main portion of the score is actually by Ennio M.
The Varèse CD is a few minutes longer than the MCA LP and is DEFINITELY worth tracking down imho. Better sound quality and better sequencing of the tracks than the *beep* has (and probably less expensive - although I don't even know if it's still available).

What do you mean it is a few minutes longer than the MCA lp. I own the cd, lp and cassettes (Varese/MCA) and I don't see or hear a difference?

The Varèse-CD is not longer than the MCA-LP. There was an error in the track timings of one of the tracks on the LP (it was listed three minutes shorter than it really was). That's all. The music is identical on LP and CD.
