Question

Does a Harold and Maude Soundtrack exist on cd?

I was wondering why there was never a soundtrack for this movie? Record, tape or CD. I know you could go and buy some of Usef Islams's(Cat Stevens) cd's and make your own comp , but I noticed that it does not exist in the soundtrack database and would like to own a copy. Even if it was an E.P. CD, I think this movie need to have an official release. What do you think?

NO CONTRACT WAS EVER SIGNED to produce a soundtrack for HAROLD AND MAUDE. A 12" LP would have been a fantastic souvenir of this great "black" comedy, but it appears not enough producers thought a soundtrack would sell: that's the bottom line, in addition to publishing rights. What's a sadder tale than that of all the soundtracks that SHOULD HAVE BEEN but never were, and all the soundtracks that SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN pressed?

Of course it's not here in the database.....because there never WAS a soundtrack.

But as you said, you COULD easily compile your own CD of the Cat Stevens songs.....and could probably even find MP3's online to download too.

L-o-n-g -- but hopefully helpful -- reply from a major Harold and Maude fan :D --

Apparently the only H&M soundtrack LP released by A&M at the time ('72) was in Japan (A&M Records GP-216)! And it didn't even include the two songs written expressly for the movie, "Don't Be Shy" and "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out". Here's the "official" answer from CatStevens.com's FAQ:

***
"Q: IS THERE A SOUNDTRACK FOR THE FILM "HAROLD AND MAUDE?":
Yes and No. A soundtrack was released for Harold And Maude, only in Japan, but did not include the two original songs from the film. Apparently they wanted to both boost sales of Cat's actual albums and also encourage fans to go see the movie to hear the new songs.

Thankfully all of the songs from the film are now available on various albums. They are "Mona Bone Jakon", "Tea For The Tillerman" and "Footsteps in the Dark".
***

I've seen Footsteps listed on eBay as a Harold and Maude soundtrack CD. It's actually a "greatest hits" sort of album, but it DOES contain the two original songs for the movie, as well as "Trouble", "On the Road to Find Out", and "Where Do the Children Play?"

Mona Bone Jakon includes "Trouble", "I Wish, I Wish", and "I Think I See the Light". Tea for the Tillerman includes "On the Road to Find Out", "Miles from Nowhere", "Tea for the Tillerman", and "Where Do the Children Play?" The Classics Vol. 24 CD will get you ONE of the original H&M songs ("If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out"), as well as "On the Road to Find Out", "Trouble", and "Where Do the Children Play?"

Whew! I bought Tillerman and Mona Bone Jakon on vinyl when they were first released; if you're an honest-to-gawd Cat Stevens fan, you'd probably enjoy the non-H&M songs on them, too.

If you do piece together your own H&M CD, the order of songs in the movie is:

- Don't Be Shy
- On The Road To Find Out
- I Wish, I Wish
- Miles from Nowhere
- Tea for the Tillerman
- I Think I See the Light
- Where Do the Children Play?
- If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out
- Trouble

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for listing the order of songs in Haorld and Maude! I saw the movie throughout for the first time tonight and I loved the music and thought for sure there would be a compiled soundtrack. I'm a new fan of both! So great of you to take the time to list those albums and info. Inspiring and kind.

I beg to differ with all of you. A soundtrack DOES exist for Harold and Maude,
as my recently departed girlfriend had it ON CASSETTE TAPE. A real,
factory-made cassette, with ALL of the songs from the movie -- not the
knock-off presently available at Amazon, etc.

Someone else on Google says it WAS released as a soundtrack in Japan in
1971.
