Question

What was the best "deal" you ever got in purchasing a soundtrack?

Mine was finding a sealed copy of THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN hexagon shaped disc for $1 at Rhino Records in Westwood, CA.

Second runner up: Sealed CHINATOWN CD for $2.99 (about a month ago!)

Wow, that Chinatown CD was a great find...not to mention the Andromeda Strain LP for $1?!? Man, that's CRAZY TALK!

I can't beat those low prices, but...

I bought an original *sealed* copy of the BREAKIN' soundtrack CD on eBay a couple of years ago for only $20 from a high-volume seller with really bad feedback. He was selling about 10 copies all at once and I guess many people thought it was a joke, so they were afraid to bid. Well, the joke's on them! If I could go back I would buy all ten copies and sell them on eBay for $100 apiece! Oh well. I also got the BREAKIN' 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO soundtrack CD on eBay for only $14.99 using the "Buy It Now" option!

A couple of years ago I purchased the original Friday the 13th soundtrack CD (Milan Records, France) for only $30 from an eBay seller with no auction photo and only a couple of positive feedbacks. Ha! So cool!

And how about the time that I e-mailed Film Score Monthly several weeks after the Omega Man soundtrack had officially sold out, wishfully asking (well, pleading) that they might search their warehouse for another copy lying around that they could sell to me. Lukas Kendall replied personally and offered to sell me the last remaining sealed "office copy" that he had, for the original asking price of $19.99! Hmmm...let me think about that for a second: "SOLD!"

THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN? You ARE a lucky fellow! (be careful, this f***ing LP will break the needle, and you know how much a good needle costs!) My personal best deal is the original LP from Lucio Fulci's "Paura nella città dei morti viventi" ("Gates of Hell", great italian horror movie scored by Fabio Frizzi.) The LP is called "Storie di paura" (from Canopo records.) I found this thing here in Montreal in a PILE OF TRASH (don't ask me what I was searching for) in MINT CONDITION (well, nearly mint...)
Another great deal : Trevor Jones's "Runaway Train" CD for 5$ in a garage sale...

Believe it or not!

A sealed copy of "SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW" for US$15,00. The amazing thing about it is that I purchased it at a soundtrack dealer (Spain's VINILO) and I guess they should have known better.

I also know of a fellow collector who purchased "BLOOD IN BLOOD OUT" on eBay for US$10,00. He was lucky enough to come across a "BUY IT NOW" auction a few minutes after it had been posted. I was told it was sold by a lady who was auctioning the CD collection of her deceased husband without a hint of its value.

Yeah, sometimes miracles DO happen! :)

I don't know much of the actual 'collectors' price, but I think these were great deals:
Film Music of Miklós Rózsa conducted by Elmer Bernstein (Varese VCD 47226), Japanese release, found in a second hand shop in Prague for $8

10 euro for Bruno Nicolai's IL TRONO DI FUOCO (eBay)

John Barry's THE WHISPERERS and Williams' THE MISSOURI BREAKS both for £1.99 (eBay)

and very recent purchase (actually yesterday) was John Barry's The Black Hole/Howard the Duck (Mask MK 703) also in a second hand shop in Prague for $14

The only "deal" I remember is the Accidental Tourist cd, I stumbled across that one 5 years ago in a second hand shop for 10 dutch guilders (appr. 4.50 euros).

Dinosaur by James Newton Howard. Brand new. $0.50 cents. :)

But if we are talking about more harder to find cd's then it would be the 2cd The Fury by John Williams. $15 AUD.

I found "The Eiger Sanction" CD for 18.95 euros.

Okey, okey... I know this is not a really hard to find soundtrack, and the price is not low at all. The really hard to believe deal was as follows: once the seller checked the price reading the UPC, the computer marked only 0.01 euros, and that was what I was charged for.

Only 0.01 euros (less than $ 0.013) for a mint sealed copy of Williams' "The Eiger Sanction". Who said that soundtrack CDs were expensive?

I once found the mother lode of original pressings of USA released soundtrack recordings in the basement of an ex-projectionist who lost the tip of his right finger back in the 1950's on a 35mm spool rewinding "To Hell And Back".

This guy had 19 cats in his house, a basement stuffed with 16mm film, old movie magazines and about ten thousand L.P.s.

An original Colpix pressing of the Bernard Herrmann score from "Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad" in very good condition for $1.50 and about 35 others film scores and a lot of old Jazz L.P's.

Another time found a copy of "The Ghost And The Darkness" CD for $2.50.

1959 Japanese pressing of "The Naked Maja" (Angelo Lavagini) for $2.00.

j.w.schenk, May 17, 2005; 10:29 PM

2 in fact. I picked up an LP copy of clifton parker's Damn the Defiant for £5 at a record fair in Birmingham, England. The seller grimaced as i handed him the fiver as he had probably mislabelled it! A few years ago i came across an LP copy of Morricone's The Mercenary in Covent Garden for £5.99.....a steal

My brother once found some CBS E-Z Cue recordings at a junk store in Columbus, Ohio for a dollar each.

, May 18, 2005; 6:45 PM

CBS E-Z Cue... I LOVE "production music" (or "library music.")
I once found a big bunch of old Dewolfe records (more than 50, one dollar each), some of them contains music used in "Dawn of the Dead", "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "The Witchfinder General", "The Crazies" and even "Ilsa She-Wolf of the SS..."
What a deal!

vodka_kayou, May 20, 2005; 12:23 AM

I have to add on more! I was walking down Lincoln Blvd in Venice California and stopped into a second hand store and spent about an hour poking through a pile of junk L.P's.

An RCA Red Seal stereo pressing of the "Ship Of Fools" recording on vinyl autographed by Ernest Gold!

vamfv's latest entry reminded me of my brother's "find" about two years ago. He called me and said that he found a mint radio station copy of soundtrack to the 1962 film GYPSY at the local Goodwill store for fifty cents. I said to him: "Big deal--I've already got it." and he retorted with "Yes, but is your copy autographed by Natalie Wood, Rosalind Russell and Karl Malden?" He had me there! Needless to say, he sold it soon after on ebay for $210.00.

I got a 5 € discount from my isp to use on an online music shop, but only for orders greater than 25 €, so I bought 6 soundtracks for about 70 €. The shipping costs where 2,95 €
The funny thing is that they had only one of them available: the cheapest one: Darkness Falls, for 3,94 €, so I finally paid 3,94+2,95-5=1,89 € for a brand new copy of Darkness Falls, shipping included :)

In Ebay Uk I also got, for £1, A John Williams hand-signed disc of Angela's Ashes.

this one fell through the cracks. you don't know how many titles I have found at that store that had been marked up because the cds were out of print. way above Ebays prices..

tracymark007, May 29, 2005; 9:50 PM

Finding the original Fright Night CD in a pawn shop for $3.00. (Inserts were badly damaged with ink.) :) Bought and sold it for a pretty penny. ;) Check your pawn shops people. Pawn shops tend to have low CD sells because no one buys them there anymore since eBay came around so you might find something very rare. ;)
