Question

Do you remember the very first movie soundtrack you ever bought yourself?

Mine was the "Thunderball" LP in the 2 for $1 bin at Woolworth's back in 1970. I still have it. Boy, what that purchase started. . .

Oh yes ! Mine was "Goldfinger" Duchesse 352017 CD in 2002. Although I bought the EMI CD later and also the remastered CD a year later, I also still have this first edition. It's worth it because all the tracks on this Duchesse CD play together without pauses between them - I got used to that so much that I didn't like the EMI albeit its better sound quality.

It's curious the 007 soundtracks introduced us both to the soundtrack world. I followed with Breakfast at Tifanny's ... and the rest is history.

Oh, those days...:-)

My first hook was the double vinyl release of "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980, closely followed by Jerry's "Star Trek". Yes, the science fiction movies did it to me back then, with the tender age of 11...

My very first soundtrack I bought was back in 1962 or 1963, I'm not so sure now, but it was the first release of DR. NO. So add me to this growing list of soundtrack collectors who became juiced by John Barry.

Although I have to admit, in those days, I was still looking for the soundtrack to THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. Who knew it would be forty years plus before it ever was released, and in a totally different format, something you couldn't even imagine at the time.

The first soundtrack I bought myself? I remember it just like if it had been yesterday... How could I forget the day I purchased the "SUPERMAN" double LP?

It was the Christmas of 1978. I was 12 years old and I had been keeping every cent of my weekly pay to buy my first John Williams album (and to this date, my favourite one).

After "SUPERMAN" came "1941" (also by Williams) and then Goldsmith's "STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE", the actual begining of my love story with movie music.

I only had got 3 soundtrack albums then, but I was convinced that I was already a serious soundtrack collector.

Those were the days...

Mine was Phantom of the Paradise on tape. I bought it when I was 15 yrs old. Thanks to my mom for playing the record over and over, I fell in love with it. I thought it rocked then, and I still think it rocks now.
Thanks Mom! :-)

My first purchase, I'm sure the first for many, was the Star Wars double lp. I wasn't convinced on first listening that this type of album was for me. Boy has that changed. I now own approximately 2300 albums and counting.

The first soundtrack I bought was a cassette of Prince's "Purple Rain," back when I was a kid in the 80's. I think that the next soundtrack I bought was a CD of Queen's "Flash Gordon," in the late 90's. From that point on I because a soundtrack fiend. The rest, as they say, is history.

Mine was "The Magnificent 7" on LP (sunset Records London) 1975. I followed that with "Fistful of Dollars/For a few Dollars more" also LP, Then Came the Bonds...........

Back to 007 and John Barry for me, too.

My sister bought me Geoff Love's Big Western Film Themes - Christmas 69; I followed it with "War" a few months later but it was 13 Nov 70 when I bought myself "Best of Bond" from my birthday money and followed it a few days later with the Sunset release of "Goldfinger". I used to think that each LP was recorded for its own release and only realised sometime later that the "compilation" LPs took tracks from previous releases and that these wonderful movie scores came from a whole range of sources!

The Sunset release of Bernstein's Mag 7/Return of the 7, Barry's OHMSS (fold-out sleeve) and Diamonds Are Forever followed shortly afterwards and by 1971 I was well and truly hooked.

I remember my father asking me to play the second side of OHMSS a second time. Contrast this, several years later, with my parents asking me not to play Star Wars side 1 again!

It was so difficult in those days (in the UK) to get anything other than current releases and poor quality 2nd hand copies.

I could type for hours on this subject but I've just received a package of 4 CDs (Morricone) from Intermezzo so I've got some unpacking to do. Happy listening to all!

My first...actually two firsts cos they were bought at the same time - Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Closely followed by Superman.

Do you see the patterns forming here? Bond and Williams...I suspect that's how many of us got started.

my first record i purchased was in 1982 The Dark Crystal..i was 8 years old at the time.and saved up a 3 week allowance.my addiction started with my mom buying me the empire strikes back double lp..after that..i was in love with film scores :)

j.w.schenk, June 15, 2005; 8:04 PM

"Friends" (Elton John) at the age of 10. You know I wouldn't have that piece of crap anywhere near me now.

It wasn't until several years later I began buying soundtrack recordings exclusively.

"Last Tango In Paris" and "Obsession".

(FFM) Speaking of Woolworths, you must remember those big cut-out vinyl blow-outs way back when. 3/$1.00!

While I had been given a few soundtracks prior to my first purchase (Star Trek:TMP on vinyl and The Empire Strikes Back on 8 Track--EGAD!) The first one I actually ponied up and bought would be Raiders of the Lost Ark. I must've watched that movie in theatres a dozen times.
Anyway, the rest (along with my pocketbook) is history.

1977. "A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far, Far Away..." That John Williams score started the interest and turned me into a collector, getting the other recent past great ones, i.e. Jaws, Close Encounters, as well as all that he was still to create with his genius--Superman, E.T. and others since. Also was (and have been) collecting Goldsmith, Barry, Phillips, et al. on LP at first, then CD.

my first soundtrack was a present of my uncle. since i always was a great bond fan, he gave me john barry's "goldfinger" LP (united artists ual 4117). but unfortunately, i did not even have a record player at that time (end of seventies)...

so my first soundtrack that i purchased myself was on tape: adolph deutsch's "some like it hot".

while i still have the lp, i don't own the tape anymore. must have been killed/stolen/rotten within one of those many parties that we celebrated... :)

Far out...yeah all the Bond LPs...yep they were cool.Keeping my ear atuned to the radio to hear the title track being played before the movie came out...loved those days.
Well beat this ...my first soundtrack was Dual at Diablo by Neal Hefti...sometime in the 60's...followed quickly by Grand Prix and then Petulia....then the world of movie collecting began...rushing to the record store and salivating over those gorgeous arty LP covers and the delights hidden inside the sleeves...the passion remains but the cupboard space gets smaller.

Gremlins and Ghostbusters (the scores boot*!?/gs", not the cheap songs albums.) I was 10 or 11 years old when I first saw these movies, and I was deeply in love with a very cute and very cool girl, Véronique...
Goldsmith and Bernstein, when they are cute and cool, are my favorites (I love funny soundtracks!) Varèse, what are you doing not releasing Gremlins?! Do we really care about Alien Nation?!)

vodka_kayou, June 16, 2005; 11:19 AM

Mine was "Beverly Hills Cop" !
It was followed by "Le Grand Bleu", which opened the way to many others ....

remowilliams343, June 16, 2005; 4:29 PM

moondog202001, June 30, 2005; 6:21 PM

Planet of the Apes LP - My mother vowed to throw it out after hearing me play it. Ha - I still have it.

dspin24358, July 1, 2005; 12:09 PM

the first one was probably the Star Wars soundtrack from Polydor.

dhisaaa, July 1, 2005; 5:02 PM

"Braveheart" in 1995 I guess. Not shure what followed right after, but either Terminator 2 or Aliens.

j.hasseriis, July 22, 2005; 11:56 PM

Back in 1962 when I first started to go to the cinema regularly I bought the LP of Ben Hur from my dad's catalogue. the film made a great impression on me when I first saw as a school kid on it's initial release (It's still my favourite film) I followed this with the soundtrack of Lawrence of Arabia and later 55 Days at Peking.

Over 40 years later I'm still collecting but it's music from the 60's and 70's that I really prefer
